Navjot Singh Sidhu accepts Imran Khan’s invitation to attend swearing-in ceremony

0
Chandigarh, Aug 11: Pakistan’s prime minister-elect Imran Khan called up cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Sidhu to extend an invitation to his oath-taking ceremony in Islamabad on August 18, the Punjab Minister said in a statement on Saturday. Sidhu has accepted the invitation and informed the Union Home Ministry and the office of the Punjab Chief Minister about his intention to attend the swearing-in ceremony.

Khan, the chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI), has personally telephoned Sidhu to extend the invitation, according to the statement.

Earlier, Sidhu said that he hoped that relations between India and Pakistan would improve with cricketer-turned-politician Khan becoming the prime minister of the neighbouring country.

China detains one million ethnic Uighurs in secret camps, UN told

0
United Nations, Aug 11: A UN human rights committee has heard there were credible reports that China is holding a million ethnic Uighurs in “counter-extremism centres”.

Gay McDougall, a member of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, raised the claims on Friday at a two-day UN meeting on China, reports the BBC.

She said she was concerned by reports that Beijing had “turned the Uighur autonomous region into something that resembles a massive internment camp”.

China has not responded to the reports. Beijing has previously denied the existence of such camps.

Its 50-strong delegation said it would address questions on Monday, when the session in Geneva continues.

Human rights groups including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have submitted reports to the UN committee documenting claims of mass imprisonment, in camps where inmates are forced to swear loyalty to Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The World Uyghur Congress said in a report that detainees are held indefinitely without charge, and forced to shout Communist Party slogans.

It said they are poorly fed, and reports of torture are widespread.

Most inmates have never been charged with a crime, it is claimed, and do not receive legal representation.

The reports come on a day of worsening religious tensions elsewhere in China, the BBC reported.

In Ningxia region, hundreds of Muslims engaged in a standoff with authorities on Friday to prevent their mosque from being demolished.

Officials said the newly-built Weizhou Grand Mosque had not been given proper building permits.

US suspends military training with Pakistan: Report

0
Islamabad, Aug 11: The Trump administration has suspended more than a decade-long military training programme of Pakistani personnel at the US institutions, a media report said today, days after Islamabad and Moscow signed an agreement to allow Pakistani troops to receive training at the Russian defence centres.

Pakistan and Russia signed an agreement on Tuesady at their first Joint Military Consultative Committee (JMCC) meeting in Rawalpindi during which the two sides discussed the present status of the bilateral defence relations and agreed that Pakistani troops will receive training at the Russian military training institutes.

The relations between Pakistan and the US nosedived this January after President Donald Trump accused Islamabad of giving nothing to Washington but “lies and deceit” and providing “safe haven” to terrorists.

The US Congress also passed a bill to slash Pakistan’s defence aid to USD 150 million, significantly below the historic level of more than USD one billion per year.

The US military institutions are struggling to fill the 66 slots they had kept aside for officers from Pakistan for the next academic year, as the Trump administration refused to provide funds for their training, the Dawn newspaper reported, quoting official sources.

The fund for the training of Pakistani officers came from the US government’s International Military Education and Training Programme (IMET) but no funds were made available for Pakistan for the next academic year, it said.

The suspension of the training first became apparent when the US National Defence University (NDU) in Washington, which has had reserved seats for Pakistani officers for more than a decade, told the outgoing Pakistani officers that the varsity has been asked to fill the positions for the next year with officers from other nations.

The NDU is one of several US military institutions that train officers from Pakistan.

The Trump administration had announced early this year that it was suspending security assistance to Pakistan over differences on Afghanistan but indicated that training programmes for military officers will continue.

The cancellation of slots kept aside for Pakistani officers, however, shows that the suspension now also applies to training programmes, the report said.

Pakistani officers have been receiving military training and education in the US since early 1960s, which were suspended in the 1990s but restored after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

Previously, it was not just Pakistan that valued the training and education of its officers received in the US.

US military institutions also proudly owned training officers who assumed senior positions after returning home, such as former Army chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, and Lt Gen Naveed Mukhtar, the current director general of the Inter-Services Intelligence, the report said.

“This is an unfortunate and ultimately counterproductive decision. There are certainly ways to send a strong message to Pakistan, but this isn’t the way to do it,” Michael Kugelman, an expert of Pakistan affairs at the Washington think tank ‘the Wilson Center’, was quoted as saying in the report.

“This move could squander what little goodwill and trust remains in the military-to-military relationship, and it reduces the likelihood that Pakistan will act in the ways that Washington would like it to act,” Kugelman said.

He said there was a long history of educational and training cooperation between the US and Pakistani militaries, and this cooperation had withstood the pressures and tensions of the relationship.

“The fact that these educational exchanges have suffered this blow now suggests that the relationship could be entering into a new phase where even the supposedly safe and protected dimensions of the relationship can become casualties of wider tensions and ill will,” Kugelman said.

So far there is no response from Pakistani official to this move by the US.

Pakistan’s defence ties with Russia have moved past the bitter Cold War hostilities in recent years and the chill in the relations between Pakistan and the US has further pushed the country towards Russia and China.

Pakistan has shown eagerness to build military-to-military level ties with Russia.

Earlier this year, the then foreign minister Khawaja Asif visited Moscow during which the two sides agreed to set up a commission to boost military cooperation.

Russia has over the past three years provided four Mi-35M combat and cargo helicopters to Pakistan and the militaries of the two countries also held joint drills codenamed ‘Friendship’. PTI

Will perform our best against India in Asia Cup, vows Sarfraz Ahmed

0
Karach, Aug 11: Pakistan cricket team captain Sarfraz Ahmed on Saturday vowed that the green shirts will perform well against India in the Asia Cup.

“We will perform our best against India in Asia Cup,” Sarfraz said while speaking to the media during an Independence Day event in Karachi.

“We will go well-prepared to play against India,” he added.

Further, the wicket-keeper batsman said, “It will be our first match against India after the Champion’s Trophy final.”

The upcoming Asia Cup encounter between Pakistan and India on September 19 is likely to be rescheduled after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) demanded a change in the fixture dates.

As per the present schedule, India will play back-to-back matches on September 18 and 19, with the game against Pakistan taking place at the Dubai International Stadium on September 19.

The 14th edition of Asia Cup was already marred with controversy after the tournament was moved from India to the United Arab Emirates on Pakistan’s request.

The Asia Cup will take place in Dubai and Abu Dhabi from September 15 to 28, with Sri Lanka taking on Bangladesh in the opening match.

We would have bowled out any team in world under these conditions: Anderson

0
London, Aug 11: England pacer James Anderson has said the conditions on day two of the second Test against India here were perfect for bowling and his side would have bowled out any batting line-up in the world under similar situations.

Anderson took his 27th Test five-wicket haul, picking 5/20, as India were bowled out for 107 runs with rain intervening thrice during this innings.

He said his side has made good use of the conditions as an attack and India just drew the short straw based on very harsh conditions.

“I think that if we bowled like that today, with those conditions, we’d bowl most teams in the world out because I think we were that good. We hardly bowled any bad balls, didn’t give them much to hit and when you build pressure like that all day, no matter who you are around the world, it is difficult. We exploited those conditions as well as anyone in the world. I don’t think it’s just the Indian batsmen that would have struggled,” said Anderson.

“Honestly, I would have been so disappointed if I had messed up today because they were the ideal conditions to bowl in, I find it so much fun when like that. You don’t often get conditions like that in England anymore, when the ball does that much through the air and off the pitch. The biggest thing is not trying to do too much, too many different things, just keep focus, try and bowl good balls and keep hoping they nick them eventually,” he said after the second day’s plat at the Lord’s.

Anderson said that the conditions did favour England heavily, especially in helping them decide on playing an extra pacer in Chris Woakes while also opting to bowl after winning the toss.

“The rain yesterday certainly made the decision for us at the toss and with a day missing as well, you need to bowl first. We didn’t think it would do that much, it looked a good pitch, dry with a bit of green grass on top but not too much. Thought it might do a bit early on, but the moisture around all day helped it do a little bit more, and through the air as well. It was not particularly warm, but warm enough and that moisture that is in the ground just helps it move around. The four of us bowled really well,” he said.

India never really got out of the woods with Anderson etching out the openers in the space of 15 balls before the first rain shower of the day. Then, there was a horrendous mix-up between Virat Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara, before India lost their last seven wickets for 92 runs when play resumed late in the day.

“I did not want to go off (for the rain break) as I felt in really good rhythm. We were on top with two early wickets and there were dark black clouds coming from that direction all day. Then we did get a deluge. It’s frustrating when you are on top, you want to stay out there and keep that pressure on the opposition. You feel like it is a chance for them to regroup and come out to play better. But we coped with that long break really well, and when we came back out, we stuck to our task brilliantly.

“It (the mix up) can happen when we were building pressure, both me and Stuart (Broad) bowling well from both ends, does create pressure. It was just a mix up, a yes and then a no, and then of course a massive downpour, which would not have made Pujara feel any better,” said Anderson.

He said that he enjoyed his latest battle with Kohli, but disagreed that India were too dependent on him.

“I was thinking why can’t he (Kohli) edge them like everyone else. I have really enjoyed the contest between him and myself. He is number one in the world for a reason. For me I love playing against the best players in the world, testing yourself and seeing whether you can get the better of them. It is a really thrilling thing to be a part of, and unfortunately I have not got the better of him yet, but I will continue to try my hardest throughout the rest of the series.

“I don’t think you can think like that (dependency) because we’ve played against all of them before. There are some real quality players in there. I think Kohli is important because he is captain, a leader and he is their best player — number one in the world. But 90 per cent of their top seven have scored runs against us in the past so we can’t look just as Kohli as a big wicket,” Anderson said.

At 36-years-old, the pacer has been bowling as good as ever in this series. The question of age does not bother him still, and he hoped that wickets would keep coming for him in the near future.

“All I think about is getting my body in as good a condition as it can be to cope with bowling out in the middle. I was delighted with how many overs I bowled at Edgbaston. For my body to get through that at this age I’m really happy with. I think it means I’m doing the right stuff off the field.

“But I don’t think about numbers or my age, I feel like, I won’t say 28, but 32. I don’t feel old. I feel like I can still throw myself around in the field as well as anyone else so as long as I feel like that I’m just going to keep playing as long as possible. Hopefully the wickets will keep coming as well and I can help this team keep winning,” Anderson signed off.

However, the offence still remains non-bailable.

First, if the husband gives triple talaq instantaneously and breaks marriage then FIR shall only become cognizable when it is filed by the victim or blood relation or relation by marriage.
Second, it has been made compoundable – if the wife and the husband desire to settle their differences then the magistrate can compound the offence on appropriate terms and conditions.
Third and finally, magistrate can grant bail after hearing the wife.
Triple talaq, or verbal divorce, is practiced by a section in the Muslim community to instantly divorce their wives by uttering ‘talaq’ three times.

PDP and BJP continue to be in a tactical alliance : Omar Abdullah

Budgam, Aug 09: National Conference Vice President Mr. Omar Abdullah on Thursday said that there was no doubt left anymore that PDP and BJP continue to be in a tactical alliance despite BJP’s withdrawal of support to the PDP.

The NC Vice President said this had against become clear when PDP’s two MPs in the Rajya Sabha abstained from voting in the election of the Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairperson and by the tragic fact that the elaborate report on 35-A continues to gather dust on the Law Secretary’s tables since one year.
“There is a very elaborate and deep intrigue to assault the State’s Special Status. The elaborate and comprehensive 60 page report on Article 35-A has still not been submitted in the Supreme Court and the file continue to gather dust on the Law Secretary’s table. This proves beyond any doubt that PDP is a part of this intrigue and continue to facilitate this anti-J&K agenda from within the State. Had National Conference not raised the grave issue of assaults on Article 35-A in the Legislative Assembly, PDP would have brazenly surrendered on the crucial issue for appeasing their allies”, the NC Vice President said.
“It was the duty of the Mehbooba Mufti Government to submit the elaborate report on 35-A in the Supreme Court but her Government chose inaction and surrender bringing us to this present situation. PDP chose not to confront the BJP and its longstanding agenda to weaken the State’s special status”, Mr. Omar Abdullah added.
