Satya Pal Malik To Replace NN Vohra As Jammu And Kashmir Governor

0
New Delhi, Aug 21: NN Vohra, Jammu and Kashmir’s longest serving governor, has finally been replaced amid differences with the centre over the formation of a new government in the state and over Article 35A on land ownership rights in the state. Bihar Governor Satya Pal Malik will take over from him.

Mr Vohra was Governor of Jammu and Kashmir for more than a decade.

The state has been under Governor’s Rule since June 20, after the BJP ended its coalition government with Mehbooba Mufti’s People’s Democratic Party or PDP, saying it was “untenable” to continue because of security concerns and rising terrorism.

Sources had last month told NDTV that the government was unlikely to continue with NN Vohra. The Centre and NN Vohra do not see eye to eye on the formation of a new government in Jammu and Kashmir, sources had said. The Centre is keen on it, but Mr Vohra, who had handled the state four times between governments, was not.

A senior functionary of the home ministry said, “At this late stage he is not ready to accommodate certain decisions”.

Mr Vohra was appointed by the Congress-led UPA government and after the BJP came to power, it continued with him. Even though his term ended on June 28, the Centre decided to extend his term until the Amarnath Yatra. The governor heads the board looking into elaborate security cover for the annual pilgrimage.

Satya Pal Malik, a former lawmaker and BJP’s national vice president, had been appointed Bihar Governor in September last year. He has served as Union Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs and Tourism in 1990.

Born on 24 July 1946, Mr Malik has held many important positions in both the Centre and the state.

The 72-year-old has been a member of the Rajya Sabha twice. After winning in general elections, he also joined the Lok Sabha from 1989 to 1990.

BJP veteran Lalji Tandon will take over from him as governor of Bihar.

Kashmir Valley observes shutdown on August 15

Srinagar, Aug 15:The Kashmir valley witnessed a complete shutdown on Wednesday following a strike call given by separatists.
Shutters of all shops and business houses remained down as traffic too remained off roads.

In a statement, the Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) protested against the rights of the Kashmiri people being “trampled”. The statement said: “New Delhi is muzzling the voices of freedom in Kashmir and people, especially the youth, are being selectively killed every alternate day.”
The JRL warned that on the day of the Independence Day celebrations, the resistance leadership would either be caged or placed in various jails “to crush the dissent, and the entire Valley will turn into a military fortress for the day and people’s right to live too will be snatched.”
Meanwhile, a large number of police and paramilitary forces have been deployed at major intersections to prevent any incident during the celebrations. Security personnel are guarding barricades at the entry and exit points of Srinagar city, and mobile services and mobile internet services have snapped in the valley. ANI

‘Jinx’ broken, BJP will be part of govt in J&K in the future: Madhav

0

The BJP will be a part of the government in Jammu and Kashmir in the future, as the “jinx” of having never been in power in the state has been broken, senior party leader Ram Madhavsaid today.

The remarks by Madhav, who is in-charge of the party’s affairs in the state, came months after theBharatiya Janata Party (BJP) pulled out of its alliance with the PDP in Jammu and Kashmir.

“I say with confidence that whenever the government is again formed in Jammu and Kashmir, the BJP will be a part of it,” Madhav said, adding that the “jinx is broken”.

At an event here, Madhav said when the BJP comes back to power, it would work towards taking Jammu and Kashmir to a new direction.

Talking about the Peoples Democratic Party-Bharatiya Janata Party coalition government that collapsed in June, Madhav said there were difficulties, but despite that, some things were achieved.

“We wanted to do a lot. But when we thought that things are not going according to us, we came out (of the government),” he said.

He said separatism since the last 70 years and terrorism since the last 30 years had hampered progress in the state.

Madhav said the BJP’s four-pronged approach to tackle the security situation in the state would continue despite the party not being in power in Jammu and Kashmir.

“Kashmir is going nowhere. Kashmir is an integral part of India,” he asserted. PTI

Death toll in Indonesia earthquake reaches 387

0
Jakarta, Aug 11:Indonesian authorities on Saturday raised the death toll in Lombok island earthquake to 387, while the number of injured and displaced went up to 13,688 and 387,067, respectively.

The 6.9-magnitude earthquake hit the island on last Sunday and was followed by 451 aftershocks, including strong ones with 5.9 magnitude earlier this week.

National Agency for Disaster Management spokesperson Sutopo Purwo Nugroho warned in a statement that the toll could further increase because of the ongoing search for victims buried under rubble and landslides after the temblor, Efe news reported.

The northern region of Lombok, where the epicentre was located, was the worst affected with 334 deaths. It was followed by West Lombok with 30, East Lombok with 10, Mataram with 9, Central Lombok with 2, and Denpasar, capital of the neighbouring island of Bali, with 2.

A total of 67,875 houses, 468 schools, six bridges, 50 oratories, 20 offices, 15 mosques and 13 health centres were demolished or damaged.

Sutopo said that conditions on the ground were difficult as there were still many victims that had not been evacuated or refugees who had not received adequate attention, coupled with continued aftershocks.

Regional authorities extended the emergency response period till August 25 given the conditions, which will help in providing assistance to victims, according to the disaster agency.

Hundreds of non-profits and community organizations were participating in the relief process in Lombok.

Lombok, located next to the Flores plate, had already suffered the impact of a 6.4-magnitude earthquake on July 29 which left 16 dead, 355 injured and 1,500 buildings damaged.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region of great seismic and volcanic activity in which some 7,000 earthquakes, mostly moderate, are recorded each year. (IANS)

We reject new sanctions, Russia tells US

0
Moscow, Aug 11:Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Friday told US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo that Russia categorically rejects new US sanctions over alleged Russian involvement in the Skripal case.

Lavrov reiterated Russia’s position that Moscow played no role in the alleged nerve agent attack on ex-Russian spy Sergei Skripal in the British city of Salisbury, Xinhua quoted the Foreign Ministry as saying.

Lavrov stressed that neither the US, nor Britain, nor any other country have provided a single fact to support their accusations, according to a Russian Foreign Ministry statement.

The US State Department said on Wednesday that Washington will impose new sanctions on Russia over the alleged poison attack on Skripal and his daughter Yulia in Salisbury in March.

Western countries claim the pair was exposed to a nerve agent and hold Russia responsible, while the Russian government has repeatedly denied any involvement in the case and demanded direct participation in the investigation.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has criticized the US decision on new sanctions and Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said Moscow will consider retaliation.

Lavrov and Pompeo also discussed issues on the international agenda, including the situation in Syria, and other topics considered during the meeting of Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart Donald Trump in Helsinki on July 16.

The two top diplomats agreed to maintain contacts on all issues of mutual interest, the statement said, adding that the phone conversation was initiated by the US side.  (IANS)

Amit Shah must apologise within 72 hours, else we’ll take legal action: TMC

0
New Delhi, Aug 11: Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Saturday demanded an apology from BJP National President Amit Shah within 72 hours or the party will take legal action against him, hours after Shah launched a scathing attack on the Mamata Banerjee-government.

“Amit Shah has insulted, disrespected Bengal today. He does not understand Bengal and its people. He has no knowledge of its tradition and culture. We are a healthy culture here and he has insulted our culture too. All that he said was blatant lies. He must apologise within 72 hours. We are giving him till Sunday, else we will take legal action against him,” said Derek O’Brien, TMC Spokesperson.

“What are you talking about cheating? Look at your own affidavit. You are a dacoit, you are a ‘dangabaaj’. We will not allow you to say all this on Bengal’s soil. Your Gujarat type of politics of robbery and dacoity will not be successful here. The communal politics will not work here in Bengal.  Don’t you dare engage in mud-slinging against Mamata Banerjee,” he added.

Shah had said, “Mamata Banerjee had put up protests across Delhi a few days ago against NRC. What is she scared of? Let me tell you what NRC is. It is a process to identify infiltrators and Bangladeshi nationals staying in Assam illegally. Given a chance, we will bring NRC in West Bengal too. How did her stand change? In 2005 she raised her voice against Bangladeshis by throwing papers at the speaker in Parliament and now in 2018 she is supporting them? Bangladeshis are her vote bank.”

Responding to Shah’s comments on NRC, Derek said, “NRC in Bengal is not an issue. Our stand on the NRC is clear. We have to save Indian citizens. It is an issue of Punjab, Bihar, Gorkhas and tribals and effects each one of them.” (Zeenews)

Never thought someone who compares Muslims to puppies will become PM: Mani Shankar Aiyar

0
New Delhi, Aug 11: In a comment that could court controversy from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), suspended Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar on Saturday said before 2014 he never imagined that a person who referred to Muslims as puppies would one day become the Prime Minister of the county.

Speaking at the inauguration of ‘Enough With intolerance National Campaign’ event at India International Centre in the capital, Aiyar said that when Narendra Modi was asked if the loss of Muslim lives in the 2002 Gujarat riots upset him, Modi replied, “Even if a puppy comes under a car, I will feel the pain.”

He further accused PM Modi of staying away from the Muslim refugee camp for 24 days after the Gujarat riots. Modi visited the Shah Alam mosque in Ahmedabad only when the then prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee came, as it was the necessity for the protocol, he further alleged and said he had never thought that such an individual can become the prime minister.

He further said, “I am proud of Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, Christians and I am very proud of Muslims. Muslims ruled India for 666 years from the throne of Delhi. From Muhammad Ghori in 1152 to Bahadur Shah Zafar in 1858 — Muslims ruled India but we remained a large nation. During this vast period, only 24 per cent Hindus converted to Islam and 76 per cent did not.”

Interestingly, the years from 1152 to 1858 totals to 706 years and not 666 years as mentioned by Aiyar.

Aiyar has been a member of both houses of Parliament. He has also served as Union Cabinet Minister under Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during the first tenure of United Progressive Alliance (UPA) in 2004. Aiyar was suspended from the primary membership of the Congress party in December 2017 after his “neech” remark on PM Modi courted a major controversy. (Agencies)
