Rupee ends flat at 69.81 against US dollar

0
Mumbai, Aug 21: The rupee today erased all its early strong gains and eventually ended just a paisa higher at 69.81 against the US dollar due to fag-end demand for the greenback from importers amid lacklustre local equities.

Despite a firm start, the domestic currency showed signs of fatigue and succumbed to renewed dollar pressure even as market participants stayed away from taking fresh positions ahead of a trading holiday.

The release of the latest FOMC meeting minutes and the key speech by the Fed Chair Jerome Powell at the central bank symposium in Jackson Hole also largely weighed on the forex front.

The Indian unit built on overnight positive momentum, climbed to an intra-day high of 69.53 before cooling off.

A broad-based US dollar sell-offs predominantly helped the rupee to stay afloat for the second-day after rebounding from its life-time low.

It has gained a solid 33 paise against the dollar yesterday.

Enjoying a strong recovery momentum, the rupee resumed higher at 69.69 from Monday’s close of 69.82 at the inter-bank foreign exchange (forex) market.

Taking fresh directional impetus, the local unit touched a session’s high of 69.53 before retreating sharply to hit a low of 69.92 in late afternoon deals.

However, overcoming the market volatility, it managed to settle with positive bias at 69.81, showing a mere one paisa gain.

The Financial Benchmarks India private limited (FBIL), meanwhile, fixed the reference rate for the dollar at 69.66 and for the euro at 80.24.

The 10-year benchmark bond yield also eased to 7.83 per cent.

The forex and money market will be closed tomorrow on account of the Bakr Id (Id-ul-Zuha).

On the global energy front, oil prices bounced back as the prospect of price support from US sanctions on Iran offset concerns about the outlook for demand, particularly in light of the trade dispute between Washington and Beijing.

The Brent crude futures were at USD 72.67 a barrel in early Asian trade.

Globally, the US dollar traded bearish against its major trading peers after the US President Donald Trump criticised the Fed Chair Jerome Powell for raising interest rates coupled with fading safe-haven demand, ahead of the anticipated US-China trade talks.

Against a basket of other currencies, the dollar index is down at 95.54.

In the cross currency trade, the rupee retreated sharply against the euro to end at 80.44 compared to 79.72 and fell back against the Japanese yen to finish at 63.33 per 100 yens from 63.15 yesterday.

It also drifted against British pound to close at 89.61 per pound from 89.11 earlier.

Elsewhere, the euro traded modestly higher against the greenback despite widening German-Italian yields spread led by fresh worries of crisis revival from Italy’s potential massive 80 billion euros budget spending.

The British pound, however, bounced back against the US dollar aftermath of President Trump’s desire to see lower rates amid growing concern of a no-deal Brexit.

In forward market today, premium for dollar showed a steady trend due to lack of market moving factors.

The benchmark six-month forward premium payable in December and the far-forward June 2019 contract both ended unchanged at 106-108 paise and 253-255 paise, respectively.

King Kohli reigns over England in third Test

0
Nottingham, Aug 21: India captain Virat Kohli´s second century of the series strengthened his side´s iron grip on the third Test against England at Trent Bridge on Monday.

Kohli, who fell for 97 in India´s first innings, top-scored with 103 as the tourists, looking to bounce back from 2-0 down in a five-match contest, piled up a total of 352 for seven declared.

That left England needing a mammoth 521 for victory, albeit with more than two days to get the runs.

But no side have made more to win in the fourth innings of a Test than the West Indies´ 418 for seven against Australia at St John´s, Antigua, in 2003.

Kohli´s declaration left England with an awkward nine overs in which to bat.

But Alastair Cook (nine not out) and Keaton Jennings (13 not out) took them to a close score of 23 without loss.

India resumed Monday on 124 for two, already 292 runs in front, with Cheteshwar Pujara 33 not out and Kohli unbeaten on eight.

They could dictate terms after skittling England out for 161, with paceman Hardik Pandya taking a stunning five for 28 in six overs.

As well as batting collapse, another longstanding problem for England has been their catching and they floored their fifth chance this match when second slip Jos Buttler, a wicket-keeper by trade, grassed a left-handed opportunity when Pujara, on 40, edged James Anderson.

Bairstow blow

England´s woes increased when wicket-keeper and leading batsman Jonny Bairstow left the field after failing to gather a swinging Anderson delivery.

An X-ray revealed he had suffered a small fracture to his left middle finger.

“It wobbled and I just copped it on the end,” said Bairstow. “It is a fracture but it´s not displaced and that is a big thing.”

England´s one-day gloveman Buttler took over behind the stumps.

It wasn´t until Monday´s 41st over that India lost their third wicket, with Pujara edging recalled all-rounder Ben Stokes to first slip Cook.

Pujara faced 208 balls, including 19 fours, and put on 113 with Kohli.

It was a welcome return to form for Pujara, who averaged just 14 while playing for Yorkshire earlier this season.

“In county cricket I thought I was batting well but didn´t score too many,” he told Sky Sports. “I was confident enough that a big one was coming soon. I missed out on a hundred but I am pleased to get 72.”

Kohli was still on his tea score of 93 not out when his edged drive off an outswinger from Anderson, armed with the new ball, burst through Jennings´s hands in the gully.

Anderson, whose duels with Kohli have been a feature of this series, buried his head in his hands in despair after the ball went for four.

´Best in the world´

Next ball, Kohli edged Anderson, England´s all-time leading Test wicket-taker, just short of Cook.

Kohli was not at his most fluent but this was an ideal innings given India´s situation and an edged four off Chris Woakes, his 10th boundary in 191 balls during nearly five hours at the crease, saw the star batsman to a 23rd Test hundred.

It was also Kohli´s second in three matches after he made 149 — his maiden Test century in England — in the series-opener at Edgbaston.

“You would be hard-pressed to argue against him being seen as the best player in the world at the moment,” said England assistant coach Paul Farbrace.

“He´s a high-quality player, and has shown he´s learnt a lot on this tour alone.”

Kohli was out shortly afterwards, lbw to Woakes after missing a legside flick against the all-rounder.

Pandya, now starring with the bat, extended India´s lead to 500 with a straight six off leg-spinner Adil Rashid and he had made a run-a-ball 52 not out when Kohli finally called a halt.

PCB Chairman Najam Sethi resigns from his post

0
Islamabad, Aug 21: Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman Najam Sethi resigned from his post on Monday, almost four years after he first took over the cricket board and oversaw the return of international cricket to Pakistan.

“I was waiting for the new Prime Minister to take oath before submitting my resignation as PCB Chairman, which I have done today. I wish PCB all the best and hope our cricket team goes from strength to strength. Eid Mubarak. Pakistan Zindabad,” Sethi said in a message to his 2.6 million followers on Twitter.

Sethi was nominated to the Board of Governors of the Pakistan Cricket Board (as per the Pakistan Cricket Board Constitution of 2014 approved by the ICC and Supreme Court of Pakistan) by ex-Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif from 2014-2017 and then again from 2017- 2020 by ex-Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi.

Doors of international cricket opened to Pakistan during Sethi’s time in the office from 2014 to 2018.  Zimbabwe, West Indies Sri Lanka and World XI visited Pakistan to play ODI series in the country after nearly a decade-long span.

Sethi said that though he had two more mandated years under his belt as PCB chairman, he tendered his resignation because he wants the prime minister to have a free hand to implement his vision for the Pakistan cricket through his chosen team, in a video message uploaded on the PCB’s facebook page.

“I hope that there won’t be any uncertainty in the PCB, team, and coaches will be supported. I wish my team best of luck. I would like to thank my team, my franchises, government, Pakistan Army for all the successes,” he added.

“Had there been uncertainty because of my presence it would have effected PSL,” Sethi said while speaking in Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Saath. “I resigned in the best interest of the PSL.”

Sethi said that the incoming PCB chairman will have the challenge to bring PSL in Pakistan.

As the head of Pakistan Super League, Sethi was successful in bringing the tournament’s final to the country in 2017 and 2018.

“I was unanimously elected Chairman PCB in August 2017 by all ten members of the BoG for a three-year term ending in 2020. I believe I have served the cause of cricket diligently,” Sethi said in his resignation letter sent to the Prime Minister Imran Khan.

“In order to facilitate your objectives in the interest of Pakistan cricket, I hereby submit my resignation as Chairman of PCB and Member of its BoG,” he added.

New PCB Chairman

Prime Minister Imran Khan will make the final decision over the appointment of new PCB chairman. Rumours are making the rounds that former ICC president Ehsan Mani is being considered for the post.

In a meeting with former cricketers on Saturday, Prime Minister Imran Khan indicated that he intends to make changes in the PCB at an administrative level.

Imran in his first address to the nation on Sunday, said that he will build more sports grounds in the country.

Salah, Modric and Ronaldo up for UEFA Player of the Year

0
Cristiano Ronaldo, Luka Modric and Mohamed Salah make up the three-man shortlist for the UEFA Player of the Year award for the 2017/18 season, European football’s governing body announced on Monday.

Ronaldo — the winner in each of the last two years — and Modric both starred for Real Madrid as the Spanish giants won the Champions League for the third year running, while the latter also won the Golden Ball for the best player at the World Cup after inspiring Croatia on their run to the final.

Meanwhile, Egyptian star Salah scored 10 times as Liverpool made it to the Champions League final, before losing 3-1 to Real in Kiev.

Salah was forced off with a shoulder injury in the first half of that game after a clash with Real defender Sergio Ramos.

He also netted 32 goals in his debut Premier League season, with that tally a record for a 38-game campaign.

Lionel Messi came fifth in the voting by a jury of 80 coaches from clubs who played in the Champions League and Europa League, as well as 55 journalists representing each UEFA member nation.

The Barcelona star came second to Ronaldo last year but also failed to make the final three-man shortlist in 2016.

Atletico Madrid’s France star Antoine Griezmann, who scored twice as his club beat Marseille 3-0 in the Europa League final, just missed out in fourth.

The winner will be named, along with the UEFA Women’s Player of the Year, in Monaco on Thursday, August 30, the same day as the draw for the Champions League group stage.

The nominees for the women’s award are France’s Amandine Henry and Norway’s Ada Hegerberg, who both won the Champions League with Lyon, and Denmark’s Pernille Harder, who lost in the final with Wolfsburg.

Brief exchange of gunshots in Handwara, searches launched

0
Srinagar, Aug 21: A brief exchange of gunshots took place between militants and government forces at Yaroo area of Langate, Handwara in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Tuesday late afternoon.

An army officer said that the patrolling party of the army was fired upon by the militants in the area. “The fire was retaliated triggering off a brief exchange of gunshots”.

The officer said that the exchange of fire continued for some time.

Soon after the incident, additional reinforcements of army and SOG reached the spot and launched a search operation to trace out the militants in the area, he said.

A police spokesman also confirmed some exchange of gunshots at Ganapora.

SP Handwara, Ashish Mishra, however, said that the forces have launched a cordon-and-search operation in the area.

The officer said that so far no contact has been established with the militants and the searches are underway. (GNS)

Suu Kyi says speed of Rohingya return is up to Bangladesh

0
Singapore, Aug 21: Aung San Suu Kyi today said it was up to Bangladesh to decide how quickly Rohingya refugees would return to Myanmar, appearing to blame Dhaka for the delay.

More than 700,000 Rohingya Muslims fled Buddhist-majority Myanmar to Bangladesh after a brutal military crackdown on the stateless minority almost a year ago.

The two countries last November signed a deal to repatriate them but it has stalled. Many fear returning to a place where villages were burned to the ground and where they say security forces murdered, tortured and raped members of their communities.

Bangladesh insists the Rohingya are on its soil temporarily but has not forced them back.

In rare public remarks on the crisis, civilian leader Suu Kyi said in a speech in Singapore that Myanmar has been ready to receive Rohingya returnees since January 23 as agreed in the memorandum of understanding.

“It’s very difficult for us to put a time frame on it by ourselves unilaterally because we have to work with Bangladesh in order to do that,” she told an audience in a lecture organised by the ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute and entitled “Myanmar’s Democratic Transition: Challenges and Way Forward”.

“Bangladesh would also have to decide how quickly they want the process to be completed,” Suu Kyi added.

Since the repatriation was signed the two countries have wrangled over details, including the way refugees are described on ID cards in Bangladesh.

Rohingya living in the crowded camps over the border in Cox’s Bazar insist on safety guarantees and citizenship rights before returning to Rakhine state in western Myanmar, where the United Nations says conditions are not ready for their return.

The US and UN have described the military’s campaign as ethnic cleansing and there is scepticism over whether Myanmar seriously intends to allow mass returns.

The crackdown against the Rohingya was sparked on August 25 last year when insurgents attacked police posts.

Calls have mounted for Myanmar’s military to be held responsible for the campaign, in which thousands are estimated to have died, and the US has sanctioned two army brigades and several commanders who oversaw the expulsion.

But Myanmar says it was simply defending itself and bristles at international calls for justice, arguing that the world does not understand the problem.

Suu Kyi, a Nobel laureate once under house arrest by the junta that ruled for decades, has seen her global reputation crumble since coming to power for failing to speak up for the Rohingya.

“We who are living through the transition in Myanmar view it differently from those who observe it from the outside and who will remain untouched from its outcome,” she said, appearing relaxed and jocular.

She also blamed Rohingya insurgents and avoided criticism of the military.

“The danger of terrorist activities which was the initial cause of events leading to the humanitarian crisis in Rakhine remains real and present today,” she said.

“Unless these security challenges are addressed, the risk of communal violence would remain.” The Rohingya are seen as outsiders in Myanmar but consider Rakhine their homeland.

They were stripped of their citizenship decades ago and subject to periodic purges while denied access to healthcare and freedom of movement.  (AFP)

Indians in UAE warned against illegal fund raising

0
Abu Dhabi, Aug 21;Indian expats enthusiasm to help flood victims in Kerala should not lead them to the wrong side of the law on fund raising in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), India’s Ambassador warned here.

“The feedback received from the UAE government suggested that some individuals and organisations are involved in fund raising. I have to draw the attention of fellow Indians to the local laws (on fund raising),” Navdeep Singh Suri told the media on Monday.

He said only organisations that have special permission from the UAE’s Community Development authorities can collect money and remit it abroad, the Gulf News reported on Tuesday.

Suri said the UAE authorities, including the Central Bank, have given the clearance for sending money directly to the Kerala Chief Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund (CMDRF), which Suri said was the best way to help the flood victims.

“We don’t want well-meaning efforts for the flood victims ending up in trouble. We are very mindful and respectful of local laws,” the Ambassador said.

Suri also advised community organisations not to open temporary money exchange counters at their premises since the local laws do not permit it.

Al Ansari Exchange, the UAE Exchange and Lulu Exchange are facilitating free-of-cost remittance to the CMDRF, said the Gulf News.

Urging people to refrain from sending relief materials, the Ambassador said he had discouraged people who offered to send large amount of mineral water and medicines to Kerala.

“First of all sending medicines needs special permission. Moreover, India is the pharmacy of the world. You can get medicines in India at one tenth cost in the UAE,” he explained.

Following the worst flooding in a century, over one million people are now sheltered in 3,274 relief camps in Kerala. The death toll since the monsoon rains began on May 29 has been estimated at around 370.  (IANS)

Nawaz Sharif, Maryam to spend Eid-ul-Adha in Adiala jail

0
Islamabad, Aug 21: Former Pakistan prime minister Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam Sharif and son-in-law Captain Mohammad Safdar will stay in Adiala jail in Rawalpindi during Eid ul Adha. They will have to spend Eid in jail itself as Islamabad High Court has postpone a decision on petitions for their release.

According to Pakistan-based The Express Tribune, Islamabad High Court bench comprising Justice Athar Minallah and Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb said that the petitions would remain pending and would be taken up along with appeals in the Avenfield properties money laundering case.

The bench, however, added that the defence can push for the petitions to be heard if there is a delay in hearing the appeals against the conviction of Nawaz Sharif, his daughter and his son-in-law.

The Sharifs were taken to Adiala jail in Rawalpindi. The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz has alleged that Sharif has been kept in abysmal condition in the jail and deprived of even the basic facilities.

The health condition of the former Pakistan prime minister deteriorated in the jail, following which he was admitted to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) due to cardiac complications. The floor where Sharif was admitted was declared a sub-jail and no one was allowed to meet him. He was later moved back to Adiala jail after his medical condition improved.

Diplomacy prerogative of Centre, Congress can’t run parallel govt: BJP

0
New Delhi, Aug 21: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday chided the opposition Congress party for its leader and Punjab minister Navjot Singh Sidhu’s hug to Pakistan Army chief Qamar Javed Bajwa during Imran Khan’s swearing-in ceremony recently.

Speaking to reporters, BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra said, “General Bajwa is a person who is responsible for the butchering of number of Indians and his glorification is condemnable. For Congress, our Army Chief is ‘sadak ke gunde’ (roadside bully) and Pakistan Army Chief is ‘sone de munde’ (golden boy).”

However, Patra said, “Diplomacy is the prerogative of the central government and cannot be outsourced. There is a sense of equivalence that Sidhu tried to draw between himself and the Prime Minister and former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Such comparisons are condemnable.”

The BJP also raised the Doklam issue. Patra said, “While the central government was working on a strategy to resolve the issue, Rahul Gandhi secretly met the Chinese envoy during dark hours of the night. Congress president should understand and learn it graciously that they are out of power and cannot run a parallel government.” (ANI)
