Pak Govt Planning Proposal to Resolve Kashmir Conflict : Shireen Mazari

0
Islamabad, Aug. 27: Pakistan’s Minister for Human Rights Shireen Mazari has said that the incumbent government in Islamabad is preparing a proposal to resolve the Kashmir issue. Mazari, made the statement during a talk hosted by Pakistan based journalist Nasim Zehra.

“The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government will prepare a proposal on resolving the Kashmir conflict within one week and present it in the cabinet. They will also discuss the issue with other stakeholders,” said Mazari adding, “The proposal is almost ready and we hope that it is considered soon.” In his first speech after winning the July 25 general elections, Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan said he wanted to have good relations with India and work to resolve all outstanding issues through dialogue. Mentioning Kashmir as the core issue of dispute between the two nations, he added that it was about time that the two countries sat across the table and discussed the issues of concern.
“We should sit across and resolve the issues instead of we blaming India for problems in Balochistan and they blame us for problems in Kashmir. I can say that if you (India) will take one step forward, we will take two steps forward. The relationship between the two countries has been one-sided so far and Pakistan has been blamed for all sorts of terrorism in the world. We want friendship with India and want to resolve all issues through dialogue,” Khan elucidated. ANI

Rumours over Article 35A hearing spark shutdown, clashes at several places in Kashmir

Srinagar, Aug 27:Spontaneous shutdown was observed at several places in Kashmir after clashes broke out between youths and security forces following rumours about scrapping of Article 35A, a police official said.

Article 35A, which accords special rights and privileges to the citizens of Jammu and Kashmir, is facing a legal challenge in the Supreme Court. “Spontaneous shutdown is being observed in many places in Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, and Anantnag district in south Kashmir,”
“ the official said.
He said announcements were made on loudspeakers that Article 35A has been scrapped and people were asked to observe a strike and come out to protest.
“Shops and other business establishments, which had opened this morning, downed shutters after rumours of Article 35A being scrapped spread like wild fire and were circulated on social media,” the official said.
Stone-pelters clashed with security personnel in Anantnag and in the Safakadal area here in the wake of the rumours, he said.
The official said security forces are on the job to control the situation. In a statement, police appealed to people to maintain calm and not pay heed to rumours.
“Some sections of media circulated news regarding Article 35A. The news is refuted as baseless. People are requested to maintain calm and not to pay heed to rumour. The main hearing is on August 31,” the statement said.

Army court orders disciplinary action against Gogoi

0
New Delhi , Aug. 27: The Indian Army’s Court of Inquiry (CoI) on Monday ordered to initiate disciplinary action against Major Leetul Gogoi in the Srinagar hotel altercation case.

Major Gogoi has been prima facie found guilty for violating the official Army policy on fraternising with a local woman and for being absent from the place of duty while on active service in an operational area.
Major Gogoi was detained by the Jammu and Kashmir Police from a hotel in Srinagar on May 23 following an altercation.
The argument erupted when major Gogoi was allegedly trying to enter the hotel with a woman and the hotel staff refused to let them in. On 26 May, Chief of Army Staff, General Bipin Rawat said that Major Gogoi would be given “exemplary punishment”, if found guilty.
Major Gogoi first made headlines in April last year when he tied a civilian to the bonnet of his vehicle as a “human shield” and drove through Jammu and Kashmir’s Budgam. (ANI)

China hails first-time participation of India, Pakistan in SCO counter-terror drill

0

Beijing, Aug 27: China on Friday welcomed the participation of militaries of India and Pakistan for the first time in a mega anti-terror drill of the SCO and hoped that the two countries could enhance dialogue and cooperation both bilaterally and within multilateral mechanisms to maintain regional peace and stability.

The anti-terror exercise of the Beijing-based Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) being held at Chebarkul town in Chelyabinsk region in Russia from August 22 to August 29 aimed at expanding cooperation among the member countries to deal with the growing menace of terrorism and extremism.

India and Pakistan are participating in the drill for the first time since becoming full members of the SCO in June 2017.

“We welcome India and Pakistan’s joint participation in this counter-terrorism exercise under the SCO framework,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying told a media briefing.

“These two countries are important ones in South Asia,” she said, adding that stable relationship between the two countries is “significant to the peace and development of the region and the whole world.”

“We sincerely hope that they could enhance their dialogue and cooperation both bilaterally and within multilateral mechanisms like the SCO, work together to improve their ties and jointly maintain regional peace and stability,” she said.

At least 3,000 soldiers from China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, India and Pakistan are participating in the drill.

The Indian contingent of 200 personnel is primarily composed of troops from infantry and affiliated arms and services along with the Indian Air Force. Chinese military experts also welcomed the participation of India and Pakistan in the counter-terrorism drill.

The previous SCO counter-terrorism drills were mainly limited to the Central Asian nations. But due to the entry of India and Pakistan, the SCO’s counter-terrorism mission has expanded to South Asia, Li Wei, a counter-terrorism expert at the China Institute of Contemporary International Relations in Beijing, told state-run Global Times.

“The effective counter-terrorism cooperation among SCO countries has greatly undermined terrorist groups in Central Asia in recent years, and it’s expected that this effective cooperation will also boost stability in South Asia, a region facing a more complicated counter-terrorism situation with a variety of active terrorist groups,” Li said.

Sun Zhuangzhi, a professor at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences said Peace Mission 2018 will also greatly improve military and political mutual trust among SCO countries, especially between India and Pakistan.

“It’s a rare opportunity for Pakistan and India, which have long been involved in military conflict, to enhance military exchanges and trust. This could improve regional stability,” Sun said.

Li said future counter-terrorism drills among SCO countries have to come up with new drills on targeting terrorist groups in South Asia.

He suggested that the SCO further expand to include Afghanistan, which is currently an observer country, to strengthen counter-terrorism efforts in South Asia.

The SCO was established in Shanghai in 2001, with China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan as founding members. It expanded to include India and Pakistan in 2017. PTI

Anderson ‘uncatchable’ once he breaks Test fast-bowling record: McGrath

0
London, Aug 27: James Anderson will not be caught once the England cricketer becomes the most prolific fast bowler in Test history, says Australia´s current record-holder Glenn McGrath.

Anderson has 557 wickets, just six fewer than the retired McGrath ahead of the fourth Test against India, which starts on Thursday.

McGrath, who played his last Test in 2007, expects Anderson to surpass his record and that it will then stand the test of time.

“Jimmy Anderson deserves everything he gets, and even though he is an Englishman I will be delighted for him when he goes past my record and becomes the most prolific fast bowler in Test history,” he wrote in Britain´s Daily Mail newspaper.

“I have an awful lot of respect for Jimmy. Good luck to him. I believe once he goes past me he will never be beaten.

“Records are nice and I´ve been very proud to have taken more wickets than any fast bowler in Test history, but any high is there to be beaten and I will be equally proud of Jimmy when he goes past me because the fast bowlers´ union has to stick together, whichever country we come from.”

Anderson, 36, made his Test debut in 2003 and has played 141 Tests for England.

Spin bowlers occupy the two three places on the overall list of Test wicket-takers — Sri Lankan off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan took 800 wickets, ahead of Australia´s Shane Warne (708) and India´s Anil Kumble (619).

Pak PM Imran says Parliament biggest platform for accountability

0
Islamabad, Aug 27: Prime Minister Imran Khan emphasised on austerity measures for effective governance in his first speech to the Senate on Monday.

The prime minister said that he will keep on attending the Senate sessions, adding that the biggest platform for accountability is the Parliament.

“The rulers should let the public know that our tax money is not for a luxurious lifestyle, it is for the people,” he said.

The prime minister also said that the rulers should cut their expenses, adding that all the ministers should lead by example in this regard.

He further said that the foreign tours will be done when the state of affairs within Pakistan has improved.

A framework will be made for investment by overseas Pakistanis and the plan will be unveiled in a week, said the PM.

Earlier, the Senate adopted a unanimous resolution against a blasphemous caricature competition in the Netherlands.

After passing of the resolution, Imran Khan addressed the upper House of Parliament.

Imran said that very few Europeans understand the hurting of Muslim sentiments over blasphemous content.

The prime minister said he understands the European mindset and they do not understand the love Muslims have for the Holy Prophet (PBUH).

Imran further said that his government will prioritise the issue and take it up with the global Muslim body, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

He said that a session of the OIC should be held to discuss the matter of blasphemous caricature competition.

Myanmar army chief must be prosecuted for Rohingya ‘genocide’: UN probe

0
United Nations, Aug 27: United Nations investigators on Monday called for an international probe and prosecution of Myanmar’s army chief and five other top military commanders for genocide against the country’s Rohingya minority.

“Myanmar’s top military generals, including Commander-in-Chief Senior-General Min Aung Hlaing, must be investigated and prosecuted for genocide in the north of Rakhine State, as well as for crimes against humanity and war crimes in Rakhine, Kachin and Shan States,” a UN-backed fact-finding mission said.

Some 700,000 Rohingya Muslims fled northern Rakhine state to Bangladesh after Myanmar launched a brutal crackdown last August on insurgents amid accounts of arson, murder and rape at the hands of soldiers and vigilante mobs in the mainly Buddhist country.

Myanmar has vehemently denied allegations of ethnic cleansing, insisting it was responding to attacks by Rohingya rebels.

But in Monday´s report, the UN mission insisted the army tactics had been “consistently and grossly disproportionate to actual security threats.”

The mission, which was created by the UN Human Rights Council in March 2017, concluded in a report that “there is sufficient information to warrant the investigation and prosecution of senior officials in the Tatmadaw (Myanmar army) chain of command.”

“The crimes in Rakhine State, and the manner in which they were perpetrated, are similar in nature, gravity and scope to those that have allowed genocidal intent to be established in other contexts,” the report said.

The investigators named Min Aung Hlaing and five other top military commanders, adding that a longer list of names could be shared with “any competent and credible body pursuing accountability in line with international norms and standards.”

Criticism was also directed at Myanmar´s civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate who has been the target of global vitriol for a perceived failure to stand up for the stateless minority.

The report found that she had “not used her de facto position as head of government, nor her moral authority, to stem or prevent the unfolding events.”

While acknowledging that she and other civilian authorities had little influence on military actions, it said that they “through their acts and omissions… have contributed to the commission of atrocity crimes.”

The investigators called on the UN Security Council to refer the Myanmar situation to the International Criminal Court, or for an ad hoc international criminal tribunal to be created.

They also recommended an arms embargo and “targeted individual sanctions against those who appear to be most responsible.”

Delegation of all parties from JK should call on Modi to defend article 35-A: Soz

0
Srinagar, Aug 27: Senior Congress leader and former Union minister Saifuddin Soz on Monday suggested that an all-party delegation of Jammu and Kashmir should call on PM Modi and Home minister to defend Article 35-A.

“The mainstream parties have thought it prudent to issue only statements for safeguarding Article 35-A, but have not shown any inclination to move forward for any other pragmatic activity,” said Soz, in a statement.

“Let the delegation of Mainstream parties call on PM and Home Minister of India and propose that the Govt. of India should take a position before the Supreme Court and assert that the Union wants that the Article 35-A, which confers special safeguards to the people of J&K State in respect of jobs, possession of land and property etc., be protected,” Soz suggested.

Hailing the people of Jammu and Ladakh for supporting Article 35-A, Soz said: “The people of Kashmir have shown a unique sense of solidarity on the need to safeguard Article 35-A of the Constitution of India. It is a heartening situation that certain sections of society in Jammu and Ladakh have also realized that Article 35-A cannot be abrogated.”

Soz hit out at the Centre for what he said watching the situation from a distance.

“In my opinion, it is ridiculous for the Central government to watch the situation from a distance and be unmindful of the turmoil that can be caused by any attempt to amend Article 35-A, against the will of the people of J&K State,” Soz in a statement said. (CNS)
