Khan’s party and allies secure over 180 seats in NA: Chaudhry

0
Islamabad, Aug 9: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party and its allies have secured over 180 seats in the National Assembly, a senior party leader said today, days after Imran Khan was nominated by his party for the next prime minister of Pakistan.

The party has already claimed to have crossed the magical figure of 172 required to secure simple majority in the 342-seat National Assembly.

After receiving support from Balochistan Awami Party-Mengal yesterday, the PTI and its allies have crossed the 180 seats mark in the National Assembly, party spokesperson Fawad Chaudhry tweeted in Urdu.

BNP-M agreed to extend its support to the PTI in the National Assembly as the two parties signed a deal that PTI leader Shah Mehmood Qureshi said would “strengthens viewpoints at the centre”, Geo TV reported.

Under the agreement between the two parties, the demographic identity of Balochistan will be preserved whereas dams will be built to curb the risk of relocation.

The PTI had earlier said it crossed the magical figure of 172 with the help of its coalition partners including Muttahida Qaumi Movement and several independently elected members, who joined the party in the days following the July 25 general elections. PTI

US to slap crippling sanctions on Russia over nerve agent attack in Britain

0
Washington/London, Aug 9: The US today said it will impose tough new sanctions on Russia after determining that Moscow used a deadly military-grade nerve agent to kill a former Russian double agent and his daughter in the UK.

Sergei Skripal, a former Russian spy, and his daughter Yulia Skripal were hospitalised and treated for a nerve agent attack in March. While Yulia was discharged from a British hospital in April, her father recovered and left the hospital in May.

The State Department said in a statement that the sanctions were in response to the use of a ‘Novichok’ nerve agent in an attempt to assassinate UK citizen and his daughter on March 4.

Russia has rejected allegations levelled by the UK that it was behind the deadly nerve-agent attack in the English city of Salisbury.

The US, on August 6, determined that the Russian government “has used chemical or biological weapons in violation of international law or has used lethal chemical or biological weapons against its own nationals,” State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said.

The statement said that following a 15-day Congressional notification period, these sanctions will take effect around August 22.

The State Department notified Congress yesterday of the first of two potential tranches of sanctions required under the 1991 law. Unless Russia takes certain steps, a second set of penalties — more stringent than this first round — must follow, according to the law.

The first set of sanctions targets certain items the US exports to Russia that could have military uses — so-called dual use technologies. These are sensitive goods that normally would go through a case-by-case review before they are exported. With these sanctions, the exports will be presumptively denied, CNN reported.

The sanctions are mandated under the Chemical and Biological Weapons and Warfare Elimination Act of 1991.

Relations between Russia and the West hit a new low after the nerve agent attack in the UK. More than 20 countries expelled Russian envoys in solidarity with the UK.

The Washington Post quoted a State Department official as saying that the sanctions could have a significant impact on trade with Russia, including prohibition of licenses on sending some US goods there, such as electronic devices.

“But unless Russia agrees within 90 days to stop all use of chemical weapons and permit inspections to confirm their elimination, additionally mandated measures could cut off almost all trade between the two countries, prohibit landing rights for Russian airlines, and lead to a suspension of diplomatic relations,” the Post report said.

In March, the Trump administration had ordered the expulsion of 60 Russians from the US, following similar actions taken by other countries in the wake of the allegation by the UK that Russia was behind the nerve agent attack.

Of the 60 expelled, 12 are intelligence operatives from the Russian mission to the United Nations who have been accused of abusing their privilege of residence in the United States.

“After a review, we have determined that the 12 intelligence operatives engaged in espionage activities that are adverse to our national security. Our actions are consistent with the UN Headquarters Agreement,” US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley had said.

Russia had responded with a similar number of diplomatic expulsions and ordered the closure of the US consulate in St. Petersburg, Russia’s second-largest city.

Britain welcomed the move from the US. In a short statement, a government spokesperson said, “The strong international response to the use of a chemical weapon on the streets of Salisbury sends an unequivocal message to Russia that its provocative, reckless behaviour will not go unchallenged.”

The Russian embassy in the US hit back today, criticising what it called “far-fetched accusations” from the US that Russia was behind the attack.

Russia had become “accustomed to not hearing any facts or evidence”, it said, adding: “We continue to strongly stand for an open and transparent investigation of the crime committed in Salisbury. PTI

13-year-old ambidextrous bowler impresses at Muzaffarabad trials

0
Muaffarabad, Aug 09: Continuing with their mission of unearthing amazing talent for Pakistan Cricket, the coaches at Pakistan Super League team Lahore Qalandars have spotted a unique talent, a 13-year old ambidextrous bowler.

Hammad Baig, a student of grade seven, was among the aspiring Qalandars who appeared at the open trials in Muzaffarabad on Thursday.

It was a lucky day for the young cricketer as national chief selector and batting legend Inzamam-ul-Haq saw him bowling in the nets.

“It was very motivating for me to bowl in front of Inzamam. He encouraged me and suggested me to bowl more with my right arm,” said Hammad, after he bowled a few deliveries in the net with both arms.

He is the second ambidextrous bowler to be spotted by Lahore Qalandars, after Yasir Jan was picked by the franchise during the first edition of their widely acclaimed players development programme.

Hammad is in no hurry and wants to take his journey step by step.

“I’m 13 and student of class 7 and youngest of four siblings. At the moment, I’m playing cricket at club level and will continue to learn from every opportunity,” he said.

His age may be a hurdle for Hammad to be part of a team from Kashmir, but Lahore Qalandars are determined to train him.

“He can become a very good cricketer in the next few years. He is too young at the moment but we will take him under our umbrella to train him and transform him into a pro,” said Aaqib Javed, Director of Cricket at Lahore Qalandars.

Asia Cup encounter between Pakistan, India likely to be rescheduled

0
Dubai, Aug 09: The upcoming Asia Cup encounter between Pakistan and India on September 19 is likely to be rescheduled after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) demanded a change in the fixture dates.

The 14th edition of Asia Cup was already marred with controversy after the tournament was moved from India to the United Arab Emirates on Pakistan’s request.

Weeks after the tournament schedule was released, the BCCI is now demanding the fixture date between the arch-rivals be changed.

As per the present schedule, India will play back-to-back matches on September 18 and 19, with the game against Pakistan taking place at the Dubai International Stadium on September 19.

While speaking toBangladesh Cricket Timesa senior BCCI official said, “The scheduling is mindless. There appears to be zero application of mind.”

He added, “How can you accept a scenario where India plays a game today and tomorrow it will face its arch-rival Pakistan who will have a two-day period of rest?”

The unnamed official said, “This is unacceptable and has to be revisited. Maybe for the organisers it is just a money-spinning game but for us it is important that there be equity in scheduling.”

Earlier, former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag had also voiced criticism over the scheduling.

“No one plays back to back matches now in one-day international (ODI) matches. It is wrong to have scheduled matches for India in such a manner,” he had said. “To play two ODI matches without a break in Dubai’s hot weather is not correct scheduling.”

This year’s tournament will take place in the UAE at Dubai and Abu Dhabi, from September 15 to 28, with Sri Lanka taking on Bangladesh in the opening match.

The Asia Cup has reverted back to its traditional 50-over ODI format this year after opting in 2016 for a T20 competition, which India won.

Pakistani authorities blacklist Sharif’s sons, block passports

0

Islamabad, Aug 8: Pakistan’s deposed prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s sons Hassan and Hussain have been placed on the blacklist by the authorities, barring them from travelling on their Pakistani passports, media reports said today.

Sharif’s sons, who live in London, were declared as absconders by a court after they failed to appear in any of the three corruption cases lodged against them along with their father after a Supreme Court decision in July 2017.

The anti-corruption body National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has requested for the names of Hassan and Hussain to be placed on the Exit Control List on which the caretaker cabinet has not passed a decision, Geo news reported.

The NAB made another request to the Immigration and Passport Directorate after which their passports were blocked and names placed on the blacklist, the report said.

Last week, the Federal Investigation Agency approached Interpol seeking issuance of Red Corner Notices against Hassan and Hussain.

An accountability court has issued warrants in the Avenfield Reference case and issued orders to immediately produce Sharif’s sons before the court. The court also issued non-bailable perpetual arrest warrants against them.

Last month, the court sentenced former prime minister Sharif to 10 years in prison, his daughter Maryam to seven and son-in-law captain (retired) Safdar to one-year in prison.

The court also imposed a fine of eight million pounds on Sharif and two million pounds on Maryam.

Sharif was disqualified as prime minister in July 2017 by the Supreme Court following a challenge to his office by cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan on the basis of publication of the Panama Papers, which alleged that the Sharif family stashed away assets in London through offshore companies Nescoll and Nelson.

The companies are owned by Hussain. Assets in question are four expensive flats in London worth over 200 million pounds.

Hussain admitted ownership of the flats but denied that they were purchased through corruption money.  (PTI)

KTMF delegation calls on Chairman J&K Bank

0

Srinagar, Aug 8: Our businesses need to keep growing so that we achieve our goals of comfortable and dignified living as a society. For that to happen, we need to join hands and bring more efficiency and transparency to our systems of working both in the institutions and the businesses.
J&K Bank Chairman and CEO Parvez Ahmed made these remarks today during a meeting with a delegation from Kashmir Traders and Manufacturers’ Federation (KTMF) led by its Senior Vice-President Fayaz Ahmad Bhat that called on him here at the bank’s corporate headquarters.
The meeting was attended by Executive Presidents R K Chhibber, P K Tickoo, Presidents Abdul Rashid Sheigan and M Younis Pattoo and other senior office bearers of KTMF.
Commending the business community of J&K on the occasion, Parvez Ahmed said, “Supporting the business community is one of our key objectives, for your progress is directly linked to our growth as a bank. And with the kind of admirable credit culture in the state, the community deserves appreciation for running their businesses honestly despite so many hardships in the state,”
“Extending our support further in this spirit, we shall soon establish Business Facilitation Centers (BFC) in all the districts of the state wherein the business community will be educated and advised on matters related to finance and banking. Also, there will be separate helpdesks at all these centers for the filing and submission of a statement like GST, ITR etc.”, he added.
The delegation hailed the role of Bank in the socio-economic development of the state especially the financial progress of the small businesses operating in the Kashmir valley. The members put forward their views and voiced their concerns and suggestions during the meeting.
“This bank is our real hope in times of need. Whether there is natural calamity or turmoil, the bank has always come to the rescue of the business community and supported it wholeheartedly. We all need to be honest in our dealings with the institution that serves the people with an unmatched dedication”, said a KTMF delegate.
Responding to the issue of skipped flood-related insurance claims of some of the bank’s borrowers, Chairman said that the bank is in the process of completing a diligent exercise to identify and analyse all the genuine claims, which will be settled soon.
“Genuine claims, if any, will be dealt with all fairness and empathy”, he said.
The delegation complained about the poor service and dismal settlement record of Bajaj Allianz, which is the insurance partner of the bank; responding to which the Chairman directed the concerned Executive President to take up the issue strongly with the said company.
“Both our reputation and our customers’ interest is involved in all this. And I will address all these issues on priority basis”, he asserted.
Regarding requests for ATMs in several areas, Parvez Ahmed issued an on-the-spot order to the concerned about the installation of ATMs, preferably with a Cash Deposit system at all the required places.
“We need to ensure that people don’t feel the need to visit our business units to deposit or withdraw small amounts of cash”, he stressed.
After listening to the personal experience of a KTMF member regarding the occasional incidences of transaction failure while making an RTGS payment, Chairman said, “The issues were already being looked into and the upgradation of the IT infrastructure was underway for all digital platforms to ensure swift and secure digital transactions”.
While terming the meeting as interesting, the Chairman assured the delegation that more such interactions with trade bodies and other representative associations will be conducted on regular basis in future not only to ascertain customer concerns and suggestions but to streamline our services and strengthen the bonds in the process.

Australia ball-tampering bans ‘shocked’ world cricket: Ricky Ponting

0

Melbourne, Aug 08: Ricky Ponting believes the lengthy bans given to former Australia captain Steve Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft for their roles in March’s ball-tampering scandal in South Africa have been a beneficial “shock” to world cricket.

Smith and his deputy Warner were given 12-month bans by Cricket Australia, with batsman Bancroft — the man who sandpapered the ball in a bid to aid reverse-swing during a Test match in Cape Town — was given a nine-month suspension.

The issue was discussed during a two-day meeting at Lord’s concluded Tuesday of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) World Cricket Committee — of which Australia great Ponting is a member.

The committee, an advisory group whose chairman is former England captain Mike Gatting, has no power to implement decisions but makes suggestions to the International Cricket Council.

“As a group we were talking about the stance Cricket Australia took and how harsh that stance might have seemed to ban players for 12 months and nine months respectively,” Ponting told a press conference at Lord’s on Tuesday.

“It’s probably got the desired outcome, a kind of shock to world cricket.

“We have seen ball-tampering incidents happen probably more consistently over the last five or six years and to my mind it’s because little things have crept in that were allowed to get to a certain point and the tipping point was a pre-meditated act that the Australian players took part in South Africa.

“So I think we are all very supportive of the ICC stance to penalise anyone who steps out of line a lot more harshly than in the past.”

‘Fair’ pitches

Ponting suggested pitches that were fair to both batsmen and bowlers, such as the one at Edgbaston last week which led, in his words, to a “fantastic Test match” where England beat India by 31 runs, would eradicate potential problems.

“If you batted well enough you could make runs and if you bowled well enough you could take wickets — that’s because the ball did something through the course of the game.

“I think the reason reverse-swing has become such a big issue in the past 10 years is that the wickets have got flatter and flatter and there’s nothing in it for the bowlers and they have been trying to find a way to keep themselves in the contest.

“So let’s look at having a fair playing surface for everybody and it might start looking after itself.”

Meanwhile, Ponting said the MCC committee had looked at the idea of introducing in-game run-penalties in a bid to speed up over-rates.

Numerous sides, as happened at Edgbaston, fail to bowl the regulation 90 overs in a Test-match day and Ponting said the current system of mainly fining players had failed to eradicate the problem.

“We are of the belief that a there-and-then run penalty in the game would be definitely worth looking at,” he said.

“You would imagine then the captains would take a huge responsibility in making sure their players are ready to go through the course of the day.

“If they are not in a position for three or four overs that could be 20 runs and in the context of the game we saw last week that could be the difference in a Test match.”
