With the J&K Assembly elections fast approaching, political activity in the border tehsil of Karnah, Kupwara, has reached a fever pitch. This time, the region, situated around 180 km from Srinagar, is seeing an unprecedented number of candidates, with over 15 contenders expected to file nominations for the upcoming elections. Voting in Karnah will take place in the third phase, following the abrogation of Article 370, which has reignited political participation across the Union Territory.
Historically, Karnah has been an active participant in democratic processes, with the region showing a higher political engagement rate compared to other parts of Kashmir. Despite this enthusiasm, local voters are growing increasingly skeptical about the influx of leaders, many of whom are accused of overlooking pressing local issues in favor of broader political narratives.
Unaddressed Local Concerns
Residents are raising concerns about the failure of candidates to address the significant issues affecting daily life in Karnah. Despite being one of the most socio-politically aware border regions, Karnah continues to grapple with:
Stalled Sadhan Tunnel Project
The long-delayed Sadhan Tunnel, which would significantly improve connectivity for the region, remains incomplete. Locals are demanding faster action on this vital infrastructure project.
Drug Abuse and Unemployment
The youth of Karnah are increasingly falling prey to drug abuse, fueled by a lack of job opportunities and resources. This issue continues to fester as political candidates focus on national and regional issues, rather than tackling the root causes of this growing crisis.
A Crowded Race
While the people of Karnah remain politically aware and engaged, there is growing cynicism regarding the sheer number of candidates. Locals joke that “every household has a politician,” yet none seem prepared to offer tangible solutions to their core issues. With the official list of candidates set to be announced on September 12, voters are hoping that the contenders will focus on Karnah’s needs rather than echoing the broader political narratives of Delhi and Srinagar.
As the population of Karnah nears the 2 lakh mark, the region stands at a crossroads. Voters are eager to see their next representative take concrete steps towards addressing local problems, such as the Sadhan Tunnel, job creation, and ensuring dignity in daily life for the border communities.
Whether the leaders will rise to the occasion remains to be seen. The voters of Karnah have made it clear: this time, they expect more than promises—they demand action.

Engineer Abdul Rashid, often referred to as “Engineer Rashid,” has made a significant impact on the political landscape of Jammu and Kashmir, especially in the northern regions who was released on Wednesday from Tihar Jail after more than five years. Hailing from Langate, he entered politics with a mission to represent the neglected aspirations of the people of Kashmir, making his presence felt as an independent voice in the Jammu and Kashmir in the recent Parliamentary Elections by a thumping majority. As the founder of the Awami Itihad Party (AIP), Rashid has become a controversial yet popular figure. With the ongoing uncertainty and unrest in the Valley, many wonder whether he can emerge as a true game changer for the region.
Engineer Rashid has built his political career on addressing the grassroots issues that affect the everyday lives of Kashmiris. His approach to politics has always been unconventional, often shunning traditional party lines and elite politics. His rhetoric focuses on the plight of ordinary Kashmiris—particularly on issues like human rights violations, unemployment, and lack of development.
Rashid’s speeches, often filled with fiery critiques of both the Indian state and the local political elite, resonate with the disenfranchised youth of Kashmir. His bold statements and actions, such as demanding plebiscites, addressing the human rights situation, and standing up to what he perceives as the suppression of Kashmiri voices, have made him a symbol of defiance.
While Engineer Rashid’s Awami Itihad Party (AIP) is still relatively small compared to other regional political players, it has consistently garnered support in pockets of North Kashmir. He has used his party as a platform to bring the marginalized voices to the forefront, distinguishing himself from the political elite who have traditionally held power in Jammu and Kashmir. His independence from the larger mainstream political parties allows him to take more radical positions, which many voters in the region appreciate.
However, the challenge for Rashid is to broaden his appeal beyond North Kashmir and establish AIP as a viable political force across the region. His ability to do so will determine if his party can rise “to the skies” and truly become a force that challenges the established players in the Jammu and Kashmir political landscape, such as the National Conference (NC) and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
Engineer Rashid’s bold leadership has earned him so many metaphorical titles in the Kashmiri context, where many view him as a leader who can guide the masses toward a new political future. His popularity among the youth, particularly in regions that have suffered due to political neglect and conflict, speaks volumes of his potential to influence political change. Yet, being a whistle blower also raises the question: Where will he lead the people?
Rashid’s brand of politics is one that revolves around people’s aspirations for dignity, justice, and representation. But his critics argue that while his rhetoric is strong, his ability to deliver real change remains unproven.
The political future of Engineer Rashid and his party will depend on how well they can translate their ideals into actionable governance. Can Rashid prove to be more than just a vocal critic of the status quo? Will he be able to build a broader coalition, appeal to both rural and urban voters, and create tangible policies that uplift the region?
Only time will tell if Engineer Rashid will emerge as a true game changer for Jammu and Kashmir. The people of the Valley hold the key to his political fate—whether they choose to continue supporting his vision of resistance and autonomy or seek alternative leadership that offers a more pragmatic approach to governance.
The road ahead for Engineer Rashid and the Awami Itihad Party is filled with challenges. His political career has been marked by his relentless advocacy for the rights of Kashmiris, but to truly establish himself as a leader of consequence, Rashid will need to navigate the complex political terrain of Jammu and Kashmir with care. If he can harness the aspirations of the people and offer practical solutions, he might well prove to be the game changer that the Valley needs.
As the future unfolds, only the people of Jammu and Kashmir can decide his and AIP’s ultimate destiny in shaping the region’s politics.

In a world that moves at lightning speed, where information, trends, and even lives seem to change in an instant, patience has become a rare virtue. Today’s youth are more ambitious than ever, driven by dreams of success and excellence. They are willing to take bold steps, set high goals, and work tirelessly to achieve them. However, there is a growing tendency to seek shortcuts to success, driven by the allure of instant results and immediate gratification. Yet, the true victory does not lie in simply reaching a goal; it lies in winning the battle with one’s own impatience, in enduring the long and often lonely journey to that goal. The real triumph is not about how fast we get there but how well we manage the challenges along the way.As we chase our dreams, we often face obstacles that test our resolve. These moments can break our spirit, making us feel helpless and lost. For the young, whose hearts are full of hope and energy, these setbacks can be particularly painful. But it is during these times of struggle and frustration that the essence of true success is forged. It is not the goal itself that is the toughest victory; it is the patience required to achieve that goal that is the most challenging battle of all.The modern era has conditioned us to expect quick results. From the rapid growth of social media to the swift pace of technological advancements, everything seems to happen in the blink of an eye. We see influencers and entrepreneurs seemingly achieving success overnight, leading us to believe that success is simply a matter of striking at the right moment. However, what we often fail to see is the years of hard work, the countless failures, and the moments of doubt that these individuals have endured to reach where they are.
Today’s youth are caught in this illusion of instant success. They strive for quick gains without realizing that real achievement is not just a destination but a journey—a journey that requires time, effort, and most importantly, patience. When things do not go as planned, frustration sets in. The feeling of being left behind, of not meeting one’s own expectations or those imposed by society, can be overwhelming. This is where the real test begins.
Patience is not just about waiting; it is about maintaining a sense of calm and faith during the waiting period. It is about trusting that every step, no matter how small, is moving you closer to your goal. It is about holding on when everything around you seems to be falling apart. In Islam, patience, or Sabr, is considered one of the highest virtues. The Holy Quran repeatedly emphasizes that Allah is with those who are patient. “And seek help through patience and prayer, and indeed, it is difficult except for the humbly submissive [to Allah]” (Quran 2:45).This verse serves as a profound reminder that patience is not just about passive endurance but about actively maintaining one’s faith and composure through difficult times. When we exercise patience, we align ourselves with a divine promise—that Allah will guide us, support us, and ultimately reward us. Patience is an act of faith, a demonstration of our trust in a higher plan and a higher power. For today’s youth, the inner struggle to remain patient is often the hardest battle. It is easy to feel defeated when progress is slow, when failures overshadow achievements, and when others seem to be moving ahead faster. But it is in these moments of self-doubt and despair that patience becomes the most valuable ally.Patience teaches us to endure, to keep moving forward, no matter how slowly. It encourages us to learn from our setbacks rather than be defined by them. It helps us understand that each failure is a stepping stone, not a dead end. By remaining patient, we build resilience—the kind of resilience that allows us to face life’s challenges head-on without losing hope or giving up.Consider the lives of those who have achieved great things. They did not do so overnight. Their journeys were marked by countless trials and tribulations. It was their ability to stay patient, to persevere through the tough times, and to keep their eyes on the bigger picture that set them apart. They understood that every moment of struggle was shaping them into the person they needed to become to handle the success that awaited them. For those who may be feeling the weight of their journey, remember that you are not alone. Every challenge, every hardship, every moment of uncertainty is a part of the path that has been set for you. Allah, in His infinite wisdom, knows what is best for each of us. As the Quran assures us, “Indeed, Allah is with the patient” (Quran 2:153). This divine companionship is the greatest source of strength we can have.We must remember that patience is not a sign of weakness; it is a sign of strength. It takes courage to wait, to trust, and to continue moving forward when everything seems to be going against you. It takes strength to keep believing in your dreams when the world tells you otherwise. But with patience, we build a foundation of faith that no amount of failure can shake.
To the youth of today, let patience be your guiding star. Let it be the light that shines through the darkest of times. Do not be disheartened by the slow pace of progress or the setbacks that come your way. Know that every step you take, every effort you make, is bringing you closer to your goal. The journey may be long, and the path may be difficult, but remember that the greatest victories are those that come with the greatest struggles.Celebrate the small wins, learn from the failures, and keep your heart steadfast in faith. Patience is not just a virtue; it is a way of life. It is the understanding that life is a series of moments, each one with its purpose and lesson. It is the wisdom to know that while we may not always get what we want when we want it, we will always get what we need when we need it.In the end, the toughest victory is not in achieving the goal itself but in mastering the patience needed to reach it. It is in overcoming the urge to quit, in finding strength in moments of weakness, and in trusting the process, no matter how long it takes. Success is not just about reaching the finish line; it is about enduring the race, learning from every stumble, and growing with every stride.Remember, Allah is always with those who are patient. Let patience be your armor, your strength, and your guide. It will not only lead you to success but will also shape you into the person you are meant to become. Hold on, stay patient, and trust that with perseverance and faith, everything will fall into place.

The upcoming Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections have ignited a fierce political battle, but beneath the surface, a harsh reality lurks. The elected representatives will have limited authority, while the Lieutenant Governor (LG) wields significant power. This has led to a scramble among politicians and bureaucrats seeking employment and influence.
Since the revocation of Article 370, Jammu and Kashmir’s governance structure has undergone a significant shift. The LG, appointed by the Central Government, now holds substantial authority, rendering the Assembly relatively powerless. This has created a situation where elected representatives will require LG’s approval for even minor decisions.
Former politicians, now without a role, are eager to secure employment and relevance. Retired bureaucrats, driven by a desire for power, are joining the fray. Seasoned politicians are reduced to begging for votes, while others switch parties if not given a mandate. Big political parties have formed alliances despite ideological differences, highlighting the lengths to which they will go to gain power.
Campaign promises range from free electricity to free rations, job security, and prisoner releases. However, these pledges ring hollow, considering the limited authority of the Assembly. The fact remains that these politicians are cut from the same cloth, and their ability to deliver on promises is questionable.
For the people of Jammu and Kashmir, these elections have become mere entertainment, a spectacle to observe from the sidelines. For the contestants, however, this is a game-changing opportunity. The real question remains: will the elected representatives be able to deliver on their promises, or will they be reduced to mere figureheads?
The election’s outcome will shape Jammu and Kashmir’s political landscape, but the underlying power dynamics will remain unchanged. The LG’s authority will continue to overshadow the Assembly, rendering its decisions ineffective. As the region navigates this complex landscape, one thing is clear: the true test of leadership lies ahead.
The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections have exposed the harsh realities of politics in the region. With power concentrated in the LG’s hands, the elected representatives will face significant challenges in delivering on their promises. As the people watch the electoral drama unfold, they must consider the long-term implications of this powerless legislature.

Every year, on September 5th, we pause to reflect on and express our gratitude for the invaluable contributions of teachers. Teachers’ Day is more than just a date on the calendar; it is a celebration of those who dedicate their lives to guiding the next generation, shaping not only their intellect but also their character, values, and aspirations.
The Essence of the Teaching Profession
Teaching is far more than the simple transmission of knowledge. It is a vocation, a calling that requires passion, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to nurturing the minds and hearts of students. Teachers are the architects of society, laying the foundational stones for every other profession. They shape the future by influencing the present, ensuring that each learner not only understands the world around them but also how they can contribute meaningfully to it.
In the 21st century, the teaching profession has evolved to encompass a broad spectrum of responsibilities. Modern teachers are not only responsible for delivering content; they are also tasked with inspiring change, fostering creativity, and encouraging critical thinking. They play a crucial role in developing a student’s ability to navigate an increasingly complex world, where knowledge is constantly expanding and the boundaries of what is possible are continuously being redefined.
The Sacred Bond Between Teacher and Student
Among the myriad relationships in life, few are as revered as that between a teacher and a student. This bond transcends the mere exchange of information. It is a relationship built on trust, respect, and mutual growth. In many cultures, including Islam, the teacher’s status is considered on par with that of a parent. This is because teachers, like parents, shape the moral and intellectual foundation of a child.
The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) emphasized the importance of teachers by identifying himself as one: “I was sent as a teacher.” This underscores the profound impact that teaching can have on an individual’s life and the collective progress of society. Parents also play the role of a teacher, and the home is considered the first university of children. Whatever children learn from their parents up until the age of puberty shapes their future lives. Teachers are, in essence, the torchbearers of wisdom, guiding their students through the intricate maze of life.
A good teacher is not just a purveyor of facts but a role model in character, ethics, and behavior. They inspire students by living the values they teach, demonstrating the importance of kindness, patience, empathy, and integrity. In this way, teachers help mold students into not just knowledgeable individuals but also responsible and ethical members of society.

The Modern Challenges of Teaching
The role of a teacher in the modern age is more demanding than ever before. The rapid pace of technological advancement and the ever-changing societal landscape require teachers to be lifelong learners themselves. They must continually update their knowledge and skills to stay relevant and effective in their teaching.
Moreover, the challenges of the 21st century extend beyond the classroom. Teachers must also address the moral and ethical dilemmas that arise in a world where information is abundant but wisdom is scarce. They are tasked with helping students navigate the complexities of social media, the pressures of academic achievement, and the challenges of mental health and well-being.
In this context, moral education becomes as crucial as academic education. Knowledge without a foundation of ethical principles is like a tree without roots—it may grow, but it will never bear fruit. The Qur’an emphasizes the importance of moral education, with many verses dedicated to the development of good character and ethical behavior. In essence, the pursuit of knowledge should go hand in hand with the pursuit of moral integrity.
Appreciation and Criticism of the Teaching Profession
While many teachers are dedicated and passionate about their work, there are unfortunately some who fall short of the high standards expected of them. It is disheartening to hear stories of teachers who lack basic skills or who are disengaged from their responsibilities.
However, it is important to approach criticism constructively. The goal should be to uplift the teaching profession, not to tear it down. One way to do this is by providing ongoing professional development for teachers, ensuring they have access to the latest educational tools and resources. Regular assessments of teachers’ performance, similar to the evaluations students undergo, could help maintain high standards in education.
Additionally, the government could consider policies that encourage teachers to invest personally in the institutions where they work. For example, requiring government teachers to enroll their children in government schools could create a vested interest in improving the quality of education in these institutions.
Balancing Duties: Why Teachers Should Focus on Education
With elections approaching in Kashmir, teachers are often assigned election duties, training, and various additional responsibilities to conduct these elections. Participation is deemed mandatory, and while some teachers may welcome these duties because of the additional perks, this practice raises concerns about their primary role as educators.
Teachers should ideally focus solely on their professional teaching duties to ensure the standard of education in government schools remains high. Unfortunately, many government schools have yet to even conduct a single exam this year, highlighting the negative impact these additional responsibilities can have on education.
The government should consider providing election duties and other roles in various programs to unemployed youth, offering them both training and an opportunity to earn a livelihood. This approach would not only alleviate the burden on teachers but also address unemployment, ensuring that educational standards in government schools do not suffer.
Moreover, the government should refrain from using educational institutes as election booths, as this disrupts the academic schedule and hampers the learning process. The loss of instructional days contributes to a decline in educational outcomes, particularly in government schools, where performance is already a concern. This disruption could further exacerbate the gap in educational standards, affecting students’ future opportunities and the overall quality of education. Alternative venues for election booths should be considered to ensure that students’ education remains uninterrupted.
The Path Forward: Uplifting the Teaching Profession
Improving the quality of education, particularly in government schools, is a critical need of the hour. This requires a multi-faceted approach that includes professional development, resource allocation, and systemic changes in how education is delivered and assessed.
In-service training programs should be introduced to help teachers stay abreast of modern educational practices and technologies. Such programs would not only improve the quality of education but also boost teachers’ confidence and competence, enabling them to better serve their students.
Early this morning, I received a thought-provoking message from a friend, highlighting how many government school teachers are often found in markets, buying gifts and cards for their children who are enrolled in private schools. This observation underscores a critical issue: the lack of personal investment in the very institutions where they teach. Encouraging government teachers to enroll their children in government schools could be a transformative strategy. This move would not only create a personal stake in the quality of education provided but also foster a deeper commitment to improving these institutions. Additionally, the introduction of regular assessments for teachers could be another step toward enhancing educational standards. These assessments should be constructive, focusing on identifying areas where teachers may need additional support or training, rather than serving as punitive measures. Such an approach would promote professional growth and ensure that teachers are equipped to deliver the best possible education to their students.
Finally, society as a whole needs to recognize and celebrate the vital role that teachers play in shaping the future. This involves not just words of appreciation but tangible support in the form of resources, professional development opportunities, and policies that prioritize education.
A Personal Contribution to Education
Whether in a supporting role behind the scenes or in more direct involvement, I, like many others, contribute to students’ education by orchestrating exams, creating assignments, and providing practice papers. We are silent observers to the remarkable dedication of teachers who mold the minds of our budding learners. With a profound sense of pride, we find ourselves deeply engaged in their educational journey, sowing the seeds of knowledge alongside these inspiring educators.
As we celebrate Teachers’ Day, let us remember that the impact of a teacher extends far beyond the classroom. Teachers shape the future by inspiring the next generation to dream, to learn, and to become the best versions of themselves. They are not just educators but mentors, guides, and role models who leave an indelible mark on the lives of their students.
In the words of Scott Hayden, “Teachers have three loves: love of learning, love of learners, and the love of bringing the first two loves together.” Let us honor these guiding lights by supporting them in every possible way, ensuring they have the tools, resources, and respect they need to continue their vital work.
Bottom Line: Honoring the Eternal Influence of Teachers
As we celebrate Teachers’ Day, let us recognize the profound impact teachers have on society. They are not only educators but also mentors, shaping the character and future of our youth. It is a day to honor their dedication, inspire change, and pledge our support to empower these guiding lights as they lead us toward a brighter and more enlightened future.
A Reflection by Allama Iqbal:
“Nahin hai na-ummeed Iqbal apni kisht-e-veeran se,
Zara num ho to yeh mitti bahut zarkhez hai saqi.”
“Iqbal is not despondent of his barren land,
With a little moisture, this soil can become very fertile.”
This couplet by Allama Iqbal perfectly encapsulates the potential that lies within each student—a potential that teachers are uniquely positioned to unlock. With the right guidance and care, even the most barren lands can become fertile, yielding a rich harvest of knowledge, wisdom, and virtue.
