Give Messi time to decide on Argentina future: Saviola

0
Kolkata, Sept 28: Former Argentina forward Javier Saviola said Lionel Messi should not be hauled up for their World Cup exit and given ample time to decide on his international career.

“We all know Argentina didn’t perform as expected in the last World Cup. But I think we should just let Messi be. Just let him relax. He will need time to decide whether he wants to play with Argentina,” said Saviola on Thursday.

“Hopefully, he will come back but if it is otherwise, it will be his personal choice,” said the 2004 Olympic champion, who shared a World Cup campaign with Messi in 2006.

Messi had decided to retire from international duty following a defeat against Chile in the 2016 Copa America final, leaving the world shocked. After being coaxed back into the Argentina set-up, Messi carried the national team on his shoulders to qualify for the World Cup this year.

But Argentina were knocked out of the World Cup after losing 3-4 to eventual champions France in a last 16 match.

Saviola, who is here as part of Barcelona Legends’ team which will play an exhibition match against Mohun Bagan on Friday, hoped Argentina will play like a ‘real team’ the next time they take the ground.

“Argentina have a lot of talented players who play for the best clubs in the world but to do well at a major competition you need to be a real team,” Saviola said.

“I hope the next time we play a tournament we will be a team and not a collection of individuals. Only then, will we be in a position we deserve.”

The 36-year-old, who shared the Barcelona changing room with Messi from 2001-07, will team up with the likes of Brazlians Edmilson and Juliano Belletti, both World Cup winners in 2002, Portuguese star Simao Sabrosa and Finland’s Jari Littmanen in the match at the Saltlake Stadium Friday.

They will be coached by Albert ‘Chapi’ Ferrer, who played under Johan Cruyff at Barcelona and won the Champions League in 1992. PTI

US wants ‘positive, constructive’ relations with Pakistan: Alice Wells

0
Washington, Sept 28: United States Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asian Affairs Alice Wells on Thursday said, the US wants “positive and constructive” relations with Pakistan.

In an interview with BBC Urdu, Wells said, “Pakistan is an important country in the region [South Asia] with an important part to play.”

Responding to a question regarding the expectations from the new government in Pakistan, the American diplomat said, “We have the same expectations from Pakistan that we have from other countries in South Asia.”

“We comply with South Asia’s policy of eradicating ‘non-state actors’ and want to eliminate terrorists’ activities and proxy in the region,” Wells added.

The American diplomat further said the US desires to work with the Pakistani government.

“US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met with Prime Minister Imran Khan after he took office and discussed positive and constructive relations between the two countries,” she said.

Wells further said, “We have told Pakistan before that terrorists’ groups are still active in the country and they need to be eliminated.”

Speaking about Pakistan and its neighbours, the American said, “We welcome the statements from PM Imran about peace with neighbours and any steps taken by Pakistan regarding this.”

Further, Wells said, “Pakistan needs to support economic stability in Afghanistan and give permission to things being brought from Afghanistan to India.”

Trade war will help India emerge as bigger trading, manufacturing base: Jaitley

0
New Delhi, Sep 28 : Finance Minister Arun Jaitley Friday said the ongoing global trade war may have created initial instability , but will gradually open up opportunities for India as a bigger trading and manufacturing base.

Calling on businesses to adopt ethical practices, Jaitley said that entities should pay their due share of taxes as the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC) will shut doors on fly-by-night’ operators.

Speaking at the annual session of PHD Chamber of Commerce, Jaitley said some global trends do adversely affect India, but going ahead they will open up avenues for the country to grow faster.

The trade war initially created instability, but eventually may open up greater markets. They will open up India as a bigger trading and manufacturing base and, therefore, we must closely watch the situation as to when the challenge turns into an opportunity, Jaitley said in his video conference address.

Experts say that the ongoing trade war between the US and China could make Indian products, like machinery, electrical equipment, vehicles and transport parts, chemicals, plastics and rubber products, competitive in the US markets.

Jaitley said the rising oil prices, too, pose a challenge for the economy, since India is a net importer of crude oil. India is 81 per cent dependent on imports to meet its oil needs.

India is the third-largest importer of crude oil, and rising international crude oil prices are inflating domestic transport fuel rates in a strong demand environment. Brent, the benchmark for half of world’s oil, climbed to USD 80 per barrel from USD 71 in the last five weeks.

Not withstanding these challenges, I’m quite certain that in the days and years to come, there are great opportunities for India in order to grow, the minister said.

Asking businesses to be ethical in their practices, Jaitley said post the IBC, doors will be shut on fly-by-night operators and those with ethical practices will find a much greater opportunity to continue their businesses.

While free trade is allowed the emphasis also has to be on ethics of the business. Those who should be paying taxes must be paying taxes and the taxpayers should not be burdened with those who evade taxes. Therefore, one of the most ethical practices has to be to bring in those who evade taxes within the tax net, the Minister said.

The IBC, Jaitley said, has imposed a new ethics on Indian businesses when you take money from lenders you have to service the debt, it can’t be that the lenders spend sleepless night after lending money to Indian businesses.

It will pay to be ethical – that is the kind of culture we are trying to introduce and that is the kind of culture Indian businesses should encourage, he said. PTI

Russia, Pakistan sign MoU on gas pipeline from Iran

0
Moscow, Sep 28 : Russia and Pakistan signed a memorandum of understanding on implementing a project to build an underwater gas pipeline from Iran to Pakistan and India, the Russian Energy Ministry said in a statement Thursday.

“The memorandum provides for the identification of authorized organisations through which the project will be supported, including during the development of a feasibility study, identification of the resource base, configuration and route of the gas pipeline,” the statement said, Xinhua reported.

Russian Deputy Energy Minister Anatoly Yanovsky and Pakistan’s Ministry of Energy Additional Secretary Sher Afgan Khan signed the document in Moscow.

Now Russia will have to inform Iran and India about the signing, after which it expects to sign a similar document with India, Yanovsky said in the statement.

The project was frozen in 2013 due to the imposition of sanctions against Iran, but its revival started in 2017. In November 2017, Russia and Iran signed a memorandum that envisaged Russian support for gas supplies from Iran to India.

In March, a Russian-Iranian working group on the implementation of the project had its first meeting.

According to Yanovsky, Russia and Pakistan were holding consultations on another project of building the 1,100 kilometer North-South Gas Pipeline (NSGP) between Pakistan’s Karachi and Lahore to transport 12.3 billion cubic meters of gas per year.

The implementation of an agreement signed in October last year between Russia and Pakistan on Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies “can become a promising direction of cooperation,” he said.

The governments of the two countries were also considering signing an agreement on Russian oil products supplies to Pakistan, Yanovsky said.

In addition, Russian electric power industry has shown interest in the Pakistani market, he said. IANS

Sushma Swaraj warns of terrorism threat at Saarc meeting, avoids Qureshi

0
United Nations, Sep 28 : Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj carefully avoided any interaction with Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi at the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (Saarc) meeting of ministers, walking out after issuing a call to end the eco-system of terrorism.

After India had called off talks between the two ministers, the focus was on the Saarc meeting here on Thursday which put them in close proximity and Sushma Swaraj took no chances.

She delivered her speech with the warning, “terrorism remains the single largest threat to peace and stability in our region, and indeed in the world”, and left the meeting at the Hotel Westin Grand before Qureshi’s speech.

The Saarc event was billed as an “Informal Council of Ministers Meeting”.

Qureshi later took a nasty swipe at Sushma Swaraj telling the Pakistani media that maybe she was feeling unwell, according to Samaa TV.

However, the Indian Minister, who has been keeping a gruelling schedule this week, went on to have her scheduled meetings with Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono and Syrian Deputy Prime Minister Walid al Muallem.

Before the Saarc event, she had spoken at the meetings of the IBSA (India, Brazil and South Africa) and BRICS (Brazil Russia, India, China and South Africa).

In her address to the Saarc meeting, Sushma Swaraj did not name Pakistan while talking of “scourge of terrorism”.

“An environment of peace and security is essential for regional cooperation to progress and achieve economic development and prosperity of our people. The number of threats and incidents that endanger South Asia’s are on the rise.

“It is necessary that we eliminate the scourge of terrorism in all its forms,A without any discrimination, and end the ecosystem of its support,” she said.

Most of her speech, though, was about a positive outlook for Saarc.

“We attach highest priority to the development and prosperity of our region, under our ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy.”

Sushma Swaraj mentioned several successful projects like the South Asia satellite, the Saarc Disaster Management Centre, the South Asian University, extending India’s Knowledge Network and the Saarc agreements on motor vehicle and railways.

“To realise our immense potential for trade, it is imperative that the further trade liberalization under South Asian Free Trade Agreement (Safta) and operationalisation of Saarc Agreement on Trade in Services (Satis) are done at the earliest.”

Qureshi, however, accused India of blocking Saarc progress and said Sushma Swaraj “spoke about regional cooperation, but how will such mutual cooperation come about if the countries in the region are ready to sit down and you are creating a barrier to these talks”, according to Samaa.

India initially agreed last week to recently-elected Prime Minister Imran Khan’s request for holding talks between Sushma Swaraj and Qureshi on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly meeting.

However, New Delhi cancelled the talks a day later after three Indian police personnel were killed in Kashmir and Pakistan issued a stamp honouring a terrorist leader.

Indian External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said while announcing the cancellation of the talks that Pakistan’s “the evil agenda” had been exposed and the “true face of the new Prime Minister of Pakistan has been revealed to the world”.

Initial overtures by Indian Prime Minister Modi for peace talks and developing friendly ties were sabotaged by Pakistani military-backed terrrorists.

With the latest effort for resuming talks meeting a similar fate, Sushma Swaraj apparently did not want to chance even an informal greeting at the Saarc meeting.

India, Pakistan foreign ministers to meet in New York

0
New Delhi, Sept 20: Breaking the ice in bilateral relations, Foreign Ministers of India and Pakistan will meet on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) session that begins later in September — the first such interaction after a long hiatus.

“I can confirm that the two foreign ministers will meet on the sidelines of the UNGA. At this stage we have just agreed to the meeting,” External Affairs Ministry (MEA) spokesperson Raveesh Kumar told the weekly media briefing here.
“The permanent missions of India and Pakistan will work out the date of the meeting,” he said, indicating it is not a resumption of dialogue.
This follows a letter written by Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking resumption of dialogue and suggesting a meeting between Sushma Swaraj and Shah Mehmood Qureshi on the sidelines of UNGA, and a letter written by Qureshi to Swaraj.
Replying to questions, Kumar said this is just a meeting and there is nothing much to be read into this at this stage.
“This meeting is taking place at the request of the Prime Minister (of Pakistan). We have not analysed details, we have just taken note of the letter written by Khan to Modi.”
Kumar also revealed that India has confirmed that it would attend a meeting of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (Saarc) foreign ministers.
“The existing policy on the Saarc process will continue. I don’t think there is any change in it,” said the MEA spokesperson.
Asked whether the foreign ministers meeting in New York is the beginning of a dialogue process, he merely repeated that they requested for a meeting and we have not discussed details. IANS
