Equatorial Guinea blasts: Death toll rises to 98

Malabo, Mar 9:  The death toll from the series of blasts that hit military barracks in the port city of Bata has climbed to 98, while the number of those injured have risen to 615, reported local media outlets.

The AhoraEg news gave this update on Monday, quoting Vice President Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue’s statement.

Several blasts hit a military base in Bata on Sunday, destroying or damaging almost all buildings.

President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo has blamed the blasts on the “negligence” of servicemen and the carelessness of farmers who lit a fire near army warehouses.

Dinesh Trivedi joins BJP

New Delhi, Mar 6: Ahead of Assembly polls in West Bengal, former Trinamool Congress MP Dinesh Trivedi on Saturday joined the Bharatiya Janata Party.

The former Railway Minister joined the BJP in the presence of party president J P Nadda.

Union ministers Piyush Goyal and Dharmendra Pradhan and other leaders were also present on the occasion.

Mr Trivedi had resigned from the Rajya Sabha on February 12.

Marathwada region registers highest single-day spike in COVID-19 cases

Aurangabad, Mar 4: Marathwada region registered its highest single-day spike in daily coronavirus cases in recent times with 871 people testing positive for the virus here, health authorities said on Thursday.
As per data, 15 patients lost their lives to the disease in the past 24 hrs.
Details from all the district headquarters collected by UNI shows that out of the eight districts of the region, Aurangabad is one of the worst affected with 371 positive cases and seven deaths followed by Beed registering 80 new cases and four deaths, Jalna had 192 new cases and two deaths, Latur had 48 cases and single death, Hingolib had 36 cases and single death, Nanded had 69 new cases, Oarbhanib had 59 cases and Osmanabad registered 16 new cases.
9,855 infection cases and 42 deaths were reported from across the state during the past 24 hours, taking Maharashtra’s cumulative case tally to 21,79,185.
Meanwhile, 6,759 patients were cured and discharged from hospitals during the same period, taking the total number of recoveries so far in Maharashtra to 20,43,349.
With this, the state’s recovery rate continues declining and stand to 93.77per cent as well as and the death rate stand at 2.40 per cent.
According to the health officials, so far, a total of 52,280 patients have succumbed to the disease in the state and more than 82,347 active patients are currently under treatment in Maharashtra.

Swiss Open: Satwik-Ashwini reach second round

Basel, Mar 3 :  Indian mixed doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Ashwini Ponnappa outshined Indonesian pair of Hafiz Faizal and Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja in their first match of Swiss Open Super 300 tournament here on Tuesday night.
The India pair thrashed the second-seeded Indonesians 21-18, 21-10 to enter the second round of the tournament.
In another match, Pranaaav Jerry Chopra and N Sikki Reddy made exit of the tournament after losing 21-18, 21-15 to England’s Marcus Ellis and Lauren Smith in their first match.

WildLife Department Catches One Among Two Leopards in South Kashmir

Shopian 3 March  : In the Heff shirmal area of south Kashmir’s Shopian district, a leopard was caught by the WildLife Department late last night on Tuesday after a rigorous effort from the department for at least one past month.

As per sources, the Kashmir News Bureau learned that two leopards were roaming in the villages of Litter, Niklora, Aglar, Heff and Shirmal for the last one month, which had caused inconvenience to the residents of the area in carrying out their daily affairs.

However, one of the leopards was caught after a department set the trap and the other one is yet to be captured.

The residents of the area said that their routine to take care of orchards was disrupted badly as the risk posed by the roaming of leopards was hovering on their heads.

They appealed to authorities to capture another one as soon as possible to prevent the orchards from getting damaged by the leopards, among which one is still at large. (KNB)

Five students killed after railing collapses at Bolivian university

Sucre, Mar 3:  At least five students were killed and three were injured after a fourth-floor railing gave way at the Public University of El Alto (UPEA) in western Bolivia, the government said on Wednesday.
“So far we have the report of 5 dead people and 3 people in intensive care after what happened at the #UPEA facilities” near the city of La Paz, Minister of Government Carlos Eduardo Del Castillo said on Twitter.
“I have just instructed the Chief of Police, Jhonny Aguilera, to go to the site to make a full report of what happened,” Del Castillo added.
According to a report from El Alto Police Commander Col. Leonel Jimenez, the fatal accident occurred during a gathering of Business Administration students.
Video posted on social media showed an altercation broke out while scores of students crowded into an interior corridor, leading to pushing and shoving before the railing collapsed.
Jimenez said the circumstances of the accident were being investigated to determine responsibilities.
