New Zealand climb to top of ODI team rankings in annual update

0

Dubai, May 3 New Zealand climbed to top of the ICC Men’s ODI team rankings in the latest annual update carried out on Monday.

‘At the start of May each year, the rating period is recalibrated so only results from the past three years are taken into consideration,’ the ICC said in a statement.

‘Essentially, results prior to May 1, 2018 no longer influence the rating method, developed by David Kendix, which determines the ICC team rankings. In the system, results from the 2018/19 and 2019/20 seasons are weighted at 50 per cent, with matches since May 2020 given their full weighting,’ it added.

In this year’s update, New Zealand jumped two spots to first on the ladder, with England slipping from top spot down to fourth.

Australia also climbed two positions to second, with India sliding to third, just ahead of England by decimal points.

England’s drop in the rankings comes after a year in which they lost series to India and Australia, as well as an ODI against Ireland. As a result of the update, England’s five straight bilateral ODI series wins in 2017/18 have been discounted from the ratings.

The Black Caps have won 20 of their 30 completed ODIs in the past three years, claiming series wins over Sri Lanka, India, and Bangladesh in that time, as well as a runners-up finish in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019.

Further down the rankings, West Indies have climbed to eighth from ninth, with Sri Lanka going the other way.

On the T20I side of the ledger, England remain No 1 and have extended their lead over India to five points.

New Zealand moved up from fifth to third, swapping places with Australia.

Despite the coronavirus pandemic, 80 countries have played the requisite six T20Is to remain in the rankings.

Sri Lanka all-rounder Thisara Perera retires from int’l cricket

0

Colombo, May 3 Sri Lanka all-rounder and former captain Thisara Perera on Monday announced his retirement from international cricket with immediate effect.

Perera submitted a letter to Sri Lanka Cricket on Monday morning, announcing his intention to retire from an international career spanning nearly 12 years.

The 32-year-old made his debut for Sri Lanka in an ODI against India in Kolkata in December 2009. Since then, he has been a white-ball regular for Sri Lanka.

He represented Sri Lanka in 166 ODIs (2338 runs, 175 wickets) and 84 T20Is (1204 runs, 51 wickets). He played the last of his six Tests back in 2016.

Perera was an important part of some of Sri Lanka’s prominent highs in white-ball cricket over the last decade, like the T20 World Cup win in 2014 where he knocked off the winning runs against India in the final in Dhaka.

“I take pride in the fact that I was able to represent Sri Lanka in seven cricket World Cups and be a contributing member of the 2014 T20 World Cup win against India in Bangladesh. Easily the highlight of My Life,” Perera wrote in his letter to SLC.

Sri Lanka Cricket thanked the former captain of the limited-overs side, adding they ‘dearly value the immeasurable services rendered by him to the game.’

‘Thisara was a brilliant all-rounder, who has contributed immensely as a player to Sri Lanka Cricket and played a part in some of the glorious cricketing moments of the country,’ said Ashley De Silva, CEO of Sri Lanka Cricket.
