Out of 14867 MWs of identified hydropower in J&K, only 3540 MWs harnessed NHPC tops the list with 2250 MWs

Jammu: With 14867 megawatts of hydropower potential coursing through its waters, J&K has potential to become a powerhouse of clean energy in India. Yet, despite this vast promise, only a fraction—3,500 megawatts—has been harnessed to date. Of this, a significant share of 2250 megawatts has been developed by the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC).
The Jammu & Kashmir Government on Saturday informed the Legislative Assembly that the UT of J&K has estimated hydropower potential of 18000 megawatts, out of which 14867 megawatts have been identified.
In a written reply to question of MLA Eidgah, as per news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), Minister in-charge, Power Development Department, Omar Abdullah informed the House that 11283 MWs of hydropower have been identified in Chenab Valley, 3084 MWs in Jehlum basin and 500 MWs in Ravi basin.
The minister informed the House that only 3540.15 MWs have been harnessed till date. Of which 2250 MWs have been harnessed in the Central sector, 1197. 4 MWs in the UT sector and 92. 75 MWs in Independent Power Producers of mode.
Out of 31 power projects in J&K, NHPC manages six projects, J&K State Power Development Corporation 13 projects and Independent Power Producers (IPP) 12 projects—(KNO)
