‎PM Modi hails ‘historic step’ for women’s empowerment as special parliament session begins

New Delhi, April 16:  ‎Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said the special session of Parliament beginning today marks a “historic step” toward strengthening women’s empowerment in the country, underlining the government’s commitment to advancing the dignity and representation of women in public life.

‎In a post on the social media platform X, Modi said, “From today’s special session of Parliament, our country is set to take a historic step toward women’s empowerment. The honour of our mothers and sisters is the honour of the nation, and with this spirit, we are moving forward firmly in this direction.”

‎Invoking a Sanskrit verse, the Prime Minister added, “You rise and illuminate the world with your rays. The sages of the Kanva lineage have invoked you with their hymns for prosperity and abundance,” signalling a cultural and philosophical emphasis on the role of women as central to national progress.

‎The remarks come as Parliament convenes for a rare special session widely expected to take up key legislative measures, including proposals linked to enhancing women’s representation in legislatures. The government has consistently framed such initiatives as part of a broader push to ensure inclusive development and gender equity.

‎The issue of women’s empowerment has remained a focal point in India’s political discourse, with successive governments debating mechanisms to increase women’s participation in decision-making bodies. While legislative efforts on reservation for women have seen periods of momentum and delay over the years, the current session is being closely watched for concrete steps that could translate long-standing commitments into action.

‎Modi’s message sets the tone for the session, positioning women’s empowerment not only as a policy priority but also as a matter of national pride and cultural ethos.
