Tomiko celebrated her 116th birthday three months ago and remains able to communicate clearly, despite being hard of hearing. She enjoys bananas and drinks Calpis every morning. Her remarkable life includes:

– Managing her husband’s textile factory during WWII
– Climbing Mt. Nijo and Mt. Ontake in her 80s and 90s
– Completing the Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage twice in her 80s
– Scaling Ashiya Shrine’s stone steps at age 100 without a walking stick

Tomiko’s family attributes her longevity to her love of long hikes. She is currently the 24th-oldest person in recorded history and has been the oldest living person in Japan since December 2023. The oldest person ever authenticated was Jeanne Calment (France), who lived to 122 years and 164 days.
