Mass grave discovered in east Afghanistan

Khost:  Local authorities have found a mass grave in Khost City, capital of east Afghanistan’s Khost province and reburied the remains of bodies on Tuesday, Qari Bismillah Bilal, mayor of Khost City, said.

The remains of about 100 bodies were discovered from a place during work to build a reservoir dam on the outskirts of Khost City on Monday, the official said, adding all the carcasses were buried at an Islamic ceremony attended by local people.

Without providing more details, the official suggested that the victims in the mass grave could speak of the brutality of decades of war in war-torn Afghanistan.

In the meantime, Khost resident Hajji Nadir in talks with Xinhua condemned the killing of human beings as a crime against humanity and called for an investigation.

Although there are no official statistics on the number of those killed during more than four decades of war and civil strife in Afghanistan, Afghans believe that more than 1.5 million people were killed in the country.

Scores of mass graves have been discovered in the country in more than two decades in the past.
