Arming civilians’ admission of Centre that it failed to bring peace in J&K : Omar Abdullah

Srinagar, Jan 10 : National Conference Vice President Omar Abdullah on Tuesday said the arming of the village defence guards by BJP was an admission that its claim of bringing normalcy after abrogation of Article 370 in 2019 had fallen flat.

Former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar while speaking to media persons in Anantnag said “If you remember that on August 5 they (BJP Government) said that if there are guns in Kashmir it is because of Article 370 and had promised that the presence of guns would come to an end soon after the article abrogated”, he said and added, “which is evident is not true”.

“The attacks we have gone through in Rajouri recently and the situation in Kashmir valley and the numbers of security forces being inducted are evident that the situation is not fully under control so far. Such measures have become a compulsion for the government”, Omar said.

Regarding the elections whether these could be held this year, he said “if the elections are not being held…don’t … We are not beggars…I have often said that Kashmiri people are not beggars”.

He said “holding Elections is our right, but to get this right we are not going to beg these people.”

In another question that the government is seizing properties or land of the people including Jamaat-e-Islami, Omar said the government wants to suppress the people on one or the other pretext that is why they are not holding elections here.

He said the government instead should have redressed the grievance of the people but are taking suppressive measures against them.

“I don’t understand what makes them to take suppressive measures against the people here”, he said and added “where ever they are getting chance they are taunting people …that is why they don’t want to hold elections here”

He said the government knows that whosoever will come to power after elections, will redress the grievances and heal the wounds of the people.

“The government has engaged themselves in taunting the people and instead to redress their grievances putting salt and Chili powder on their wounds”, Omar said.
