Cold conditions continue in Kashmir valley, Ladakh

Srinagar, Jan 12 : Freezing cold condition continue to prevail in Kashmir and Ladakh even as temperature at several places are showing a slight improvement except the ski resort of Gulmarg which remained the coldest place with temperature plummeting to minus 11.0 on Thursday.

A Meteorological Department official said that Srinagar, the summer capital of Kashmir, recorded a slight improvement in the night temperature recorded a low of minus 2.7 degree Celsius against the minus 3.6 degree Celsius the previous day which was minus 0.6 degree below normal during this time of the season, he said.

The famous ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir remained the coldest place in Kashmir valley even after showing a slight improvement in temperature was recorded at minus 11.0 against the minus 11.5 degree Celsius on Thursday which is minus 3.1 degree below normal during this period of season.

Pahalgam, the famous tourist resort in south Kashmir also witnessed improved temperature and the minimum was recorded at minus 9.4 degree Celsius against the minus 11.6 degree Celsius a day before, he said.

Qazigund on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway slipped to a low of minus 5.8 degree Celsius against the minus 5.3 degree Celsius the previous day.

Kukernag, also in south Kashmir recorded a low of minus 6.1 degree Celsius against the minus 7.2 degree Celsius on Thursday which was minus 2.5 degree below normal during this time of the season.

The night temperature in frontier Kashmir district of Kupwara also improved and was recorded at a low of minus 2.5 degree Celsius against the minus 5.5 degree Celsius on Tuesday,.

Leh in Ladakh recorded a low of minus 15.5 against minus 13.1 degree Celsius the previous day while mercury at the automatic station in Kargil plummeted to 16.9 degree Celsius against minus 14.7 degree Celsius recorded a day ago while, Drass the world’s second coldest place after Siberia recorded a low of minus 21.9 degree Celsius against minus 27.7 degree Celsius, the official said.
