India registers 58,097 Covid cases, 534 deaths

New Delhi, Jan 5 India recorded 58,097 fresh Covid-19 cases, almost 55 percent higher than Tuesday’s tally of 37,379, and 534 deaths, the Health Ministry said on Wednesday.

The total death toll has now climbed to 4,82,551.

The Ministry said the total active cases in the country stood at 2,14,004.

The recovery tally rose to 3,43,21,803 as 15,389 people got freed from the disease. The recovery rate is 98.01 per cent.

Meanwhile, 2,135 cases of Omicron variant of coronavirus have been reported across 23 states and Union Territories, out of which 828 have recovered or migrated, according to the Union Health Ministry’s data updated on Wednesday.

Maharashtra has recorded the maximum number of 653 cases followed by Delhi at 464, Kerala 185, Rajasthan 174 and Gujarat 154.

The government is speeding up the vaccination drive across the country.

“India has so far administered 147.72 crore doses of the Covid-19 vaccine so far,” the Ministry said.
