PM Modi arrives in Rome for G20 Summit

Rome/New Delhi, Oct 29: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday arrived in Rome, Italy, to attend the 16th G20 Leaders’ Summit.

“Landed in Rome to take part in the @g20org Summit, an important forum to deliberate on key global issues. I also look forward to other programmes through this visit to Rome,” the PM tweeted on arrival.

He also tweeted the message in Italian.The Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Arindam Bagchi in a tweet said:

“Arrivo a Roma!

“PM @narendramodi arrives to a warm welcome in the Eternal City. “Looking forward to extensive engagements in bilateral and multilateral formats.”

He was received by senior officials of the Government of Italy and the Ambassador of India in Italy Neena Malhotra.

The PM is set to hold important bilateral meetings with world leaders on the sidelines of the G20, including with summit host Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi.

He will also call on Pope Francis at the Vatican.The G20 is the first in-person Summit of the grouping since the outbreak of the pandemic in 2020.

In a departure statement yesterday, the PM said that the summit “will allow us to take stock of the current global situation and exchange ideas on how the G20 can be an engine for strengthening economic resilience and building back inclusively and sustainably from the pandemic”.
His visit, from October 29-31, at the invitation of the Italian Prime Minister. He will later travel to Glasgow, United Kingdom, from November 1-2 at the invitation of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, for the COP26 summit.

The G20 is an intergovernmental forum comprising 19 countries and the European Union. It works to address major issues related to the global economy, such as international financial stability, climate change mitigation, and sustainable development.
