Saradha scam: SC refuses to set up spl bench to hear ex-top cop’s plea

New Delhi, : The Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to set up a special bench to hear former Kolkata police chief Rajeev Kumar’s plea, which sought extension of seven day protection from arrest in connection with the Sardha chit fund case.
On Monday, Kumar approached the Supreme Court pleading for an extension of time to seek legal recourse against his possible arresting by the CBI, in connection with his alleged role in not cooperating with the probe agency in the case.
Kumar has cited the strike of lawyers in West Bengal and the Election Commission’s refusal to sanction him leave for more than two days as grounds for seeking extension.
The bench of the Apex Court, headed by Justice Indira Banerjee, asked Kumar to approach the Secretary General for setting up of a three-judge bench for hearing his case.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is probing the case, had alleged that Kumar is not cooperating with it in the case.
Rajeev Kumar’s protection, which began on May 17, will end on May 24.
