No more Tonga’s within Municipal Limits of Sopore from tomorrow

Ban on movement of Tonga’s a move to decongest town, prevent pollution: ADC Sopore: File Photo

Sopore, Feb 10: In a significant development, the administration in Sopore in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district has banned the movement of horse carts (Tongas) within the municipal limits of the area saying it’s a move aimed to “de-congest and eliminate the risk and pollution factors.”

Interestingly, several grievances were submitted to Lieutenant Governor’s office by the locals stating that the town mostly remains under a traffic jam and pedestrians remain under the threat of getting hit.

Talking to news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Sopore, Pervaiz Sajad Ganai said that the order for the ban on plying of Tonga’s has been issued to decongest the town and an alternate route map was given to Tonga owners.

He said that Tonga has been plying within municipal limits and that it was leading to frequent traffic snarls. “These Tongas were not only the reasons for traffic jams but the horse buns lead to dirt and people’s movement never remained risk-free,” he said.

The ADC said that apart from the Tonga ban, “we have also shifted vendors to other places to ensure there is no traffic jam.”

“We have given Tonga’s alternate routes but not the same where it often leads to traffic jams forcing people to suffer,” he said—(KNO)
