Shopian fake gunfight: No system of cash rewards for gunfights, says Army

Srinagar: The army on Monday refuted the reports that claimed the Captain of 62 Rashtriya Rifle (RR) murdered three civilians in a Shopian fake gunfight for a reward of 20 lakh rupees.

“It is clarified that Indian Army has no system of cash awards for its personnel for any acts in combat situations or otherwise in the line of duty,” said Rajesh Kalia, the army’s Srinagar-based spokesperson. “The report is malafide (misleading) and not based on facts of the processes internal to Indian Army.”

On Sunday, in Media Reports quoting that police charge-sheet, that the army captain Captain Bhoopinder Singh, who had staged the fake gunfight on 18 July 2020 in Amshipora along with two south Kashmiris by abducting three Rajouri-natives, had done it with “motive for grabbing a reward money of Rs 20 lakh and also fired at the victims even before his men could lay a cordon of the area”.

Immediately after the gunfight in July last year, the government forces had labeled them as “terrorists”. However, about a month later, in August, the pictures of the trio’s dead bodies were circulated on social media and the family identified them as their missing relatives — identified as Ibrar Ahmed; Mohammad Imtiyaz, 21; Mohammad Abrar, 16.
