South Korea’s national security council expresses concerned regarding North Korean missile launch

Seoul, Mar 25 : South Korea’s National Security Council conveyed a meeting on Thursday morning where it expressed deep concern over North Korea’s missile launches, the South Korean presidential administration said in a statement.

Presidential administration said “The council members, after a serious discussion for an hour and a half, expressed deep concern about the missile launches while the US is reviewing the North Korea policy.”

Meeting decided to strengthen cooperation with all related states for a thorough analysis of the background and intention of the launches.

North Korea on Thursday morning fired what appeared to be two short-range ballistic missiles into the East Sea, said South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS).

The missiles were fired from the North’s eastern town of Hamju, South Hamgyong Province, at 7:06 a.m and 7:25 a.m. and flew around 450 kilometers with an altitude of 60 km, the JCS said.

Srinagar, Mar 25 : Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor’s Advisor Baseer Khan Thursday said that the UT administration is carrying out a comprehensive survey to explore the new tourist destinations so that tourist go beyond Gulmarg and Pahalgam while visiting the Valley. He also said that the government has started a new project to add to the beauty of the 35 acre sprawling Tulip garden located in the Zabarwan foothills in Srinagar at the cost of Rs 10 Crore to offer more to the visitors.

Talking to reporters after throwing the world famous Asia’s largest Tulip garden open for tourists and locals, he said the government is working on a “comprehensive policy” to explore hidden and new tourist destinations. “Like we have Dodhpathri in Budgam, Basoli, Bhaderwah in Jammu areas. Tourists will have more places soon to visit beyond Gulmarg and Pahalgam,” he said.

Advisor Khan said that the garden spread over 35 acres of land presents a breathtaking view for tourists and other visitors. “J&K UT is famous for its beauty across the globe. Tulip garden adds to the beauty of Kashmir. Earlier, tourists visiting Kashmir were confined to Mughal Gardens only, but now Tulip garden is their first preference. You can see on the very first day of opening of Tulip garden, there are a lot of domestic and foreign tourists present,” he said as per news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO)

He said that the garden has been officially thrown open for the visitors and tourists from today onwards. “On April 3, LG Mano Sinha sir will officially inaugurate the Tulip festival wherein we will showcase Kashmir’s rich culture, cuisine, art, and handcrafts etc. That will help attract more tourists and also help promote J&K UT’s rich traditions and culture,” Advisor Khan said.

He said at present there is only 25 per cent Tulip bloom and till April 3, the garden will be in full bloom. “There will be cultural programs also. That way, we will be presenting a bouquet of love, art and culture to the people visiting the garden besides the tulip bloom,” Advisor Khan said.

He said the J&K administration has undertaken a new project at the cost of Rs 10 Crore in the backside of the garden to add more beauty to it. “That’s the phase-2 of the Tulip garden. There will be a cherry garden and other attractive trees and flowers in the backside of the garden that will be an added attraction,” Advisor Khan said and urged visitors to follow the Dos and Don’ts displayed outside the garden for following the SoPs in spirit.  “While enjoying the beauty of the garden, every visitor must follow the Covid-SoPs religiously,” Advisor Khan said.

Questioning of former CM Mehbooba by ED underway in Srinagar

Srinagar, Mar 25: Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti is being questioned by Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with money laundering case in Srinagar on Thursday.

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba arrived at Rajbagh office of ED at 1100 hrs. However, without talking to media persons she immediately entered the ED office where her questioning was underway.

Earlier, heavy security arrangements had been made around the ED office.

Mehbooba, in a letter, had asked the ED to question her in Srinagar or make arrangements for same through video conference as she will not appear before the agency in Delhi.

Earlier, the 61-year-old politician was served a notice to appear at the ED headquarter in the National Capital, New Delhi on March 15 in a case filed under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.

Ms Mufti, who described the summoning by ED as political vendetta, approached Delhi court for a stay. However, the a bench of Delhi High Court comprising Chief Justice D N Patel and Justice Jasmeet Singh refused to stay the summons.

The PDP chairman, who is the vice-chairperson of the Peoples Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD), was released last year after more than a year in detention following the scrapping of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status on August 5, 2019.

The ED, which had earlier summoned Mehbooba for March 15, had not insisted for her personal appearance at that time. Later, she was summoned for March 22.

However, Ms Maufti said she was not informed if she is being summoned as an accused or as a witness. She after receiving ED summons had alleged that Centre’s “tactics to intimidate and browbeat political opponents” won’t work.

“GOI’s tactics to intimidate & browbeat political opponents to make them toe their line has become tediously predictable. They don’t want us to raise questions about its punitive actions & policies. Such short-sighted scheming won’t work,” she wrote on Twitter”.

Srinagar-Jammu highway reopens after two days, Leh, Mughal roads still shut

 

 

Srinagar, Mar 25 : Traffic on the national highway, the only all-weather road connecting Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, was resumed on Thursday after remaining suspended for two days due to land and mudslides and shooting stones, triggered by rain.

Meanwhile, the national highway, the only road connecting Union Territory (UT) of Ladakh with Kashmir, historic Mughal road and Anantnag-Kishtwar road remained closed due to accumulation of snow and avalanches.

A traffic police official told UNI today that traffic has been restored on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway. Kashmir-bound vehicles, mostly those stranded at different places, including Udhampur, were allowed to move after getting green signal from the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) and traffic police personnel deployed on the highway.

He said the road was closed following massive landslides at Cafeteria Morh, Sitaram Passi and Digdol and shooting stones at several places and mudslides at Sherbibi and Shabanbass.

The NHAI working almost round the clock since yesterday to put through the highway. One-way traffic was resumed only today, he said adding that there is still threat of landslides and shooting stones.

Meanwhile, the national highway connecting Ladakh with Kashmir valley remained closed since January 1.
However, Beacon had cleared the snow and declared the highway open on February 28 only to suspend traffic again after few hours due to fresh snowfall and avalanches.Traffic to Sonamarg was also suspended due to snowfall. However, traffic was allowed from Srinagar to tourist resort of Sonamarg on the highway after remaining suspended for about a week.

The historic 86-km-long Mughal road which remained closed for any traffic or pedestrian movement since December last year. There are many avalanche prone areas on the road, connecting Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region.

The Anantnag-Kishtwar road also remained closed due to accumulation of snow.

Kohli, Rohit advance in ICC T20I Player Rankings

Dubai, Mar 24:  Captain Virat Kohli and vice-captain Rohit Sharma are among the India batsmen to progress in the latest ICC Men’s T20I Player Rankings released on Wednesday after clinching a home series against England 3-2 in Ahmedabad.

Kohli, who slammed an unbeaten 80 off 52 balls coming in as opener and was associated in a stand of 94 with Rohit that set the platform for the 36-run victory in the third T20I, has moved up one place to fourth position and is now the highest ranked from his country ahead of Lokesh Rahul.

Rohit’s 34-ball 64 in that match has helped him move up three places to 14th in the latest weekly rankings update which took into account the three-match Afghanistan-Zimbabwe series in Abu Dhabi apart from the last two matches of the India-England series, the ICC said in a statement.

In other gains for India’s batsmen, Shreyas Iyer has moved up five places to a career-best 26th position while rookie Suryakumar Yadav and wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant too have made rapid progress.

Yadav, who debuted in the second match of the series but could not garner any points as he did not get to bat, has pushed up from the bottom to 66th position after scores of 57 and 32 while Pant has moved up 11 places to 69th in the rankings.

Seam bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar, player of the match in the last match for his spell of two for 15, has moved up 21 places to 24th while Hardik Pandya has advanced 47 places to 78th.

For England, Dawid Malan maintains a healthy lead at the top of the rankings after his 68 in the final match while Jos Buttler has inched up one place to 18th.

Leg-spinner Adil Rashid (up one place to fourth) and fast bowlers Jofra Archer (up 12 places to 22nd) and Mark Wood (up 12 places to 27th) have advanced in the bowlers’ list.

Afghanistan too had a lot to cheer about after whitewashing Zimbabwe 3-0 with Rahmanullah Gurbaz gaining 16 slots to reach a career-best 21st position after topping the series aggregate with 114 runs.

Najibullah Zadran (up five places to 41st), captain Asghar Afghan (up six places to 52nd) and Usman Ghani (up 39 places to 85th) have also made headway.

However, leg-spinner Rashid Khan has lost his place at the top of the rankings despite finishing with six wickets in the series as he conceded 7.60 runs an over. South Africa spinner Tabraiz Shamsi is now number one for the first time in his career. Rashid had been pretty much at the top since 5 February 2018, only dropping to second place for two days in March 2020.

Karim Janat (up eight places to 30th) and Naveen-ul-Haq (up 48 places to 94th) are the Afghanistan bowlers to advance in the latest update, while for Zimbabwe, Ryan Burl (up 38 places to 102nd among batsmen) and Blessing Muzarabani (up 24 places to 102nd among bowlers) have made significant progress.

In the ICC Men’s ODI Player Rankings, Jonny Bairstow is up four places to a career-best seventh position after his knock of 94 in the opening match of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League series against India in Pune.

Captain Eoin Morgan has advanced one place to 24th. All-rounder Ben Stokes has moved up from 75th to 64th among bowlers while also leapfrogging compatriot Chris Woakes to third place among all-rounders.

India opener Shikhar Dhawan’s match-winning 98 has lifted him two places to 15th and Bhuvneshwar Kumar has gained five places to move into the top 20 in the latest ODI update, which considered performances in the opening India-England ODI and the first two matches of the New Zealand-Bangladesh series.

New Zealand, who have taken a winning 2-0 lead, see left-hander Tom Latham move up five places to 30th and to a career best 631 rating points after notching 110 not out in the second match.

Matt Henry has moved into the top 10 (from 11th to eighth) and Mitchell Santner has gained eight places to reach 25th among bowlers.
