Fuel prices remain unchanged

0

New Delhi, Nov 17 : The prices of petrol and diesel remained unchanged for the 13th day in a row on Wednesday.

The fuel prices had come down sharply on November 4 after the Centre announced reduction in excise duties on petrol and diesel by Rs five and Rs ten respectively.

In the national capital a litre of petrol costs Rs 103.97, Rs 104.67 in Kolkata, Rs 109.98 in Mumbai and Rs 101.40 in Chennai.Similarly, a litre of diesel is available at Rs 86.67 in New Delhi, Rs 89.79 in Kolkata, Rs 94.14 in Mumbai and Rs 91.43 in Chennai.

After the Centre cut the excise duties, most state governments and union territories too reduced Value Added Tax (VAT) on petrol and diesel, providing much relief to the common man.

Some states, mostly non BJP- ruled, however, are yet to undertake any reduction in VAT on motor fuels.

Prices of diesel and petrol were rising for the last few days across the country, breaching all previous records but the Centre’s announcement to cut the excise duties gave relief to people using the two motor fuels. The rise in the fuel prices in the domestic market was mainly attributed to global upsurge in crude oil prices.

China may have already established nuclear triad, says Pentagon report

0

Washington, Nov 4 :The US Defense Department in a new report says that China may have already established a nuclear triad, which includes the ability to launch nuclear-capable missiles from the air, ground and sea.

The report also says that the accelerated pace of advancements in Beijing’s nuclear capability may enable China to have up to 700 deliverable nuclear warheads by 2027.

Its China Military Power Report provides background on China’s national strategy, foreign policy goals, economic plans and military development.

“The PRC has possibly already established a nascent ‘nuclear triad’ with the development of a nuclear-capable, air-launched ballistic missile and improvement of its ground- and sea-based nuclear capabilities,” the report reads.

The Pentagon states that the “PRC likely intends to have at least 1,000 nuclear warheads by 2030 — exceeding the pace and the size projected” in last year’s report.

New to the report this year is a section on the Chinese military’s chemical and biological research efforts. It says China has engaged in biological activities with potential dual-use applications and that this raises concerns regarding its compliance with the Biological and Toxins Weapons Convention and the Chemical Weapons Convention.

The report concludes that China continues to be clear in its ambitions to be competitive with world-class military powers.

“The PLA’s evolving capabilities and concepts continue to strengthen its ability to fight and win wars, to use their own phrase, against what the PRC refers to as a ‘strong enemy’ — again, another phrase that appears in their publications. And a ‘strong enemy,’ of course, is very likely a euphemism for the United States,” an official said.

According to the report, a big part of China’s effort to match the strength of a “strong enemy” involves major modernization and reform efforts within China’s army.

Those efforts include an ongoing effort to achieve “mechanization,” which the report describes as the Chinese army’s efforts to modernize its weapons and equipment to be networked into a “systems of systems” and to also utilize more advanced technologies suitable for “informatized” and “intelligentized” warfare.

Also of significance are China’s efforts to project military power outside its own borders.

“The PRC is seeking to establish a more robust overseas logistics and basing infrastructure to allow the PLA to project and sustain military power at greater distances,” the official said.

“We’re talking about not just within the immediate environments, environments in the Indo-Pacific, but throughout the Indo-Pacific region and indeed, around the world.”

The official said China’s army has sought to modernize its capabilities and improve its proficiency across all warfare domains, so that, as a joint force, it can conduct the range of land, air, and maritime operations that are envisioned in army publications, as well as in space, counterspace, electronic warfare and cyber operations.

India beat Afghanistan by 66 runs, keep their hopes alive in T20 WC

0

Abu Dhabi, Nov4: India beat Afghanistan by 66 runs and kept their hopes alive in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Abu Dhabi, here on Wednesday.
With this massive win, India’s net run rate has crossed over into positive territory. The Indian batsmen were in a belligerent mood.
Chasing 211 is a difficult job and the Afghanss were expectedly in trouble. They lost early wickets and although Rahamanullah Gurbaz played a cameo, his dismissal disrupted the momentum. The result was irrelevant because it was thereafter a fight for net run rate between the rivals.
Afghanistan could manage 144 for 7 in 20 overs with the contributions coming from the bats of Karim Janat (42) and Mohammad Nabi (35). Rest of the batters did not contribute much.
Though there is a big task ahead for India, they certainly were the happier side tonight.
Afghanistan still have the hopes of qualifying in their own hands, unlike India, if they beat New Zealand. But India could spoil their dreams if they do what they did on Wednesday for two more games in a row. The key word for India is hope.
India put on board 210 for 2, which was their second-highest in World Cups, thanks to the rollicking start openers KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma provided and the finishing touches from Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya’s broad blades in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup’s Super 12 group stage match against Afghanistan here on Wednesday.
After successfully crossing the 200-run mark total, India had its task cut out to restrict Afghanistan to 99 or less so that their NRR is more than Afghanistan and New Zealand’s, to keep their hopes alive in the tournament, after losing badly to Pakistan and New Zealand.
Sent into bat, Rahul and Rohit belted superb half centuries to help India get off to a quick start by stitching a 140 runs partnership for first wicket. Rahul scored 69 runs off 48 balls while Rohit hammered 74 runs in 47 deliveries.
The unconquered Rishabh Pant (27) and Hardik Pandya (35) gave finishing touches by smacking the Afghanistan bowlers to help India race past the 200-run mark.
Both openers executed great shots and managed to hit boundaries and sixes at will to give the team a flying start, which was lacking in the previous two games.
Rohit was back to his rhythmic best as he reached his 23rd T20 International fifty after he slapped the ball off Naveen-ul-Haq for four.
Then, Rahul got to his fifty off just 35 balls, launching Gulbadin Naib’s slower ball outside off for a four. His fifty was quicker than Rohit, though he made a slower start.
They also celebrated the historic moments when both Rohit and Rahul became only the fourth pair with four or more century partnerships in men’s T20 Internationals. Rahul joined the party, hitting his 13th T20 International fifty with a glorious boundary.
Rohit ended up hitting Karim Janat straight to Nabi at extra-cover, flat and at around waist height. Rahul followed him soon as he was beaten by the slower yorker off Gulbadin trying to scoop, and clung to the bails.
The Afghan bowling performance left much to be desired, in particular the puzzling decision from Captain Mohammad Nabi to bowl just the solitary over.
For the first time, Rashid Khan could manage only dot off his first two overs. On an average, six balls out of the first two overs Rashid bowls in a T20 international are dots. This was Rashid’s fourth-worst analysis in all T20 internationals.
Chasing a massive 211 runs target, Afghanistan scraped to 98 for 5 in 16 overs as they were looking at a huge defeat and a big drop in their net-run-rate, but they managed to go ahead of New Zealand after the late flurry of Nabi and Janat.
Both Ravindra Jadeja (1 wicket) and Ravichandran Ashwin (2 wickets) bowled in tandem and restricted Afghanistan batsmen to score freely as they pricked up three wickets between them.
Jadeja gave Ashwin a hand by removing one of the right-handed batsmen, which brought in a left-hand batter, which made Ashwin’s task easier on comeback. Ashwin took the other right-hand batter to make it 59 for 4 in the 10th over. At the end of the Powerplay, Afghanistan were 47 for 2.
Mohammad Shami and Jasprit Bumrah removed Hazarutllah Zazai and Mohammad Shahzad in two balls to make it 13 for 2 in 3.1 overs. The Afghan batsmen looked completely outclassed against high pace and some movement and ended 66 runs short of India.
Rohit was declared man of the match

Rabada set South Africa up for a convincing six-wicket victory over Bangladesh

Rabada set South Africa up for a convincing six-wicket victory over Bangladesh

Abu Dhabi, Nov 2 : A blistering spell from Kagiso Rabada set South Africa up for a convincing six-wicket victory over Bangladesh here on Tuesday.

Rabada took three wickets in his opening spell and Bangladesh never recovered as the Proteas

kept their charge for a semi-final place on track at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021.

With this win, South Africa have three wins from four matches ahead of a clash with Group 1

leaders England, with Australia their most likely challengers in the battle for the last four.

Rabada finished with figures of three for 20, his best showing in T20 internationals, while Anrich Nortje took three for eight as Bangladesh were bundled out for just 84.

South Africa had no trouble chasing that down, with skipper Temba Bavuma leading from the

front in making an unbeaten 31 to take his side home.

Bangladesh, deprived of the injured Shakib Al Hasan, chose to leave out Mustafizur Rahman

and replace him with all-rounder Shamim Hossain.

At the top of the order Mohammad Naim and Liton Das made a promising start but in the fourth

over, Rabada changed the complexion of the game. Naim pulled the bowler straight to midwicket

to go for nine, and next ball he was followed back to the hutch by Soumya Sarkar, trapped in front

by a searing inswinger.

Mushfiqur survived the hat-trick ball two overs later but did not trouble the scorers as he edged

to slip and Reeza Hendricks held on after juggling the ball.

If it was not one South Africa quick, it was another causing the issues as Nortje had too much

bounce for Mahmudullah who gloved the ball onto his shoulder and into the grateful arms of Aiden Markram at point, leaving Bangladesh in trouble at 34 for four.

Afif Hossain went next ball as he tried to charge Dwayne Pretorius and the ball clattered into the stumps off his pads.

Liton had been the only real resistance for Bangladesh but when Tabraiz Shamsi entered the fray,

he finally removed the opener for 24.

Shamim and Mahedi Hasan stemmed the flow of wickets for a while, but eventually the former fell trying to attack Shamsi and picking out Keshav Maharaj in the deep.

The only area of the game where South Africa had been a little off their best was the ground fielding, but skipper Bavuma made up for that with some smart work to run out Taskin Ahmed.

Mahedi hit the first six of the innings but then perished as he tried to take on Nortje and simply lobbed the ball back to the bowler for 27. Nortje finished the innings off in style as Nasum Ahmed hit his own wicket backing off against the speed of the right-armer.

Bangladesh’s total was never likely to be enough, but Taskin got them off to a strong start with one that came back and trapped Hendricks for four in the first over.

Quinton de Kock was then flummoxed by a straight one from Mahedi before Markram edged to slip off Taskin as South Africa slipped to 33 for three.

However, Bavuma and Rassie van der Dussen came together to take South Africa to the brink, although the latter was brilliantly caught by Shoriful Islam off Nasum leaving David Miller to finish it off.

Scores in brief:

Bangladesh 84 all out

South Africa 86/4,

Player of the Match: Kagiso Rabada (South Africa).

India look to clinch first win by beating Afghanistan by huge margin

India look to clinch first win by beating Afghanistan by huge margin

Abu Dhabi, Nov 2 🙂 After suffering crushing defeats at the hands of Pakistan and New Zealand, India will eye to beat Afghanistan by a huge margin to keep their hopes alive in the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

Another defeat will confirm India’s early exit from the tournament. Therefore, India will look to go all guns blazing to script a huge win in tomorrow’s match to bring down Afghanistan’s net run rate to +3.097.

Kohli’s side will then hope to see Afghanistan beating New Zealand. If all three teams secure six points, qualification will depend upon net run rate.

With such a huge task cut for them, India will be in tremendous pressure. The task to beat Afghanistan may not be easy as well because the tails of their rivals are up after winning two games out of the three.

On the flipside, India have lost their first two matches badly, and they will be facing Afghanistan who have not let their rivals register a win against them after putting 160 plus total on the board since the start of 2016.

And, interestingly, Kohli is the only Indian batsman with a T20 half-century against Afghanistan. Moreover, India’s batting has not clicked in the tournament so far. However, they will hope Rahul will come good at the top. It will be interesting to see if Suryakumar will return to the team.

The bowling, too, has been off-taste. Jasprit Bumrah was the lone crusader in the last match. Ravichandran Ashwin may get a look in place of Varun Chakravarthy.

Being India’s third match in the tournament, their think-tank have not yet got their combination right. Not only Kohli made changes in the team but also in batting order against New Zealand.

Kohli had drafted in Ishan Kishan and Shardul Thakur in place of the injured Suryakumar Yadav and off-color Bhuvaneshwar Kumar, and also sent the southpaw wicketkeeper-batsman to open with KL Rahul against New Zealand. These changes failed to make any impression.

Despite these problems at hands, India’s track record against Afghanistan has been clean-sheeted. The only time India met Afghanistan was in the T20 World Cups. India won by seven wickets in the 2009 edition and the second match in 2012 was close, with India claiming a 23-run win.

Afghanistan’s batting also has been good. They have played attacking shots and helped their team to put up a good total on the board. Usman Ghani is likely to get a chance in place of the retired Asghar Afghan.

Afghanistan already boasts of having two high-quality spin bowlers including Rashid Khan, but an addition of Mujeeb Ur Rahman will add more spice to their bowling attack. Rashid is in great form and is a potential threat for Indian batsmen.

Afghanistan will be looking to play spectacular cricket against a diffident Indian side.

Pay Cut: JK Bank Security Guards up in arms against Chandigarh based ‘Delta Company

Srinagar, Nov 1, KNT: Security Guards associated with Jammu and Kashmir Bank Monday staged a protest against Chandigarh based ‘Delta Company’ against huge pay cut.

Scores of security guards assembled at Press Enclave Srinagar and registered their protest.

There are around 3500 skilled and unskilled security guards working at different banks and ATMs in Srinagar, Ganderbal and Budgam.

“This protest is not against JK Bank but against the Chandigarh based Delta Company that despite being paid by JK Bank in advance has resorted to pay cut,” Tahir Ahmed, one of the protesters told news agency Kashmir News Trust.

He said: “Earlier JK Bank had given contract to Chandigarh based ‘Para-Green’ Company. The Para Green Company was paying Rs 11,250 to skilled guards and Rs 7,500 monthly to unskilled security guards. Now JK Bank has given the contract to another Chandigarh based ‘Delta Company’, that shortly after getting the contract resort to reduction in monthly salaries.”

The new company will pay Rs 9,000 to skilled guards and Rs 5,500 to unskilled guards. Besides, it has asked the security guards to pay Rs 15,000 from their own pockets so that uniform and other things can be arranged for them.

The protesters said that JK Bank pays Rs 18,000 per security guard to this private security company but instead of spending a major portion on hapless and poor security guards, this company is intending to exploit them and keep the major chunk of money with itself.

The protesters appealed JK Bank to take up the issue with the ‘Delta Company’. (KNT)
