Severe Drinking Water Crisis in Srinagar,Supply disrupted in dozens of areas; residents in distress

Firdous Wani

Srinagar: Following the recent floods, a severe shortage of drinking water has emerged in several areas of Srinagar city. Water supply has been suspended for five days in dozens of localities including Rajbagh, Mehjoor Nagar, Padshahi Bagh, Dalgate, Sonwar, Bund, and Kruso Rajbagh, causing great distress among residents.

Residents of these areas have complained that no water is available from taps, forcing them to endure severe mental stress, anxiety, and physical hardship. Many locals reported that they are forced to buy water from markets, while some have to travel to nearby areas to fetch water.

Muhammad Rafiq Dar, a resident of Rajbagh, said,

“We have not received a single drop of water in our homes for five days. Water supply is completely cut off in several areas including Rajbagh near Masjid Owaisa, MP Lane, and Dr. Majid Wani Lane. Children, elderly, and patients are facing extreme difficulties during these times.”

He added that although the occasion of Eid Milad-un-Nabi (PBUH) was being celebrated today, water supply was still not restored. Residents from Mehjoor Nagar, Padshahi Bagh, Dalgate, Sonwar, and other areas also accused authorities of water supply disruption.

On the other hand, sources from the Jal Shakti Department explained the reasons for the suspension of water supply:

“The health and safety of citizens is our top priority. Due to the recent floods, there is a risk that contaminated water may have entered the supply pipes, hence the water supply has been temporarily suspended.”

Senior officials of the department stated that alternative water supply is being provided via tankers in the affected areas, and residents in need should contact the concerned department for assistance.

They further said that immediate steps are being taken to restore 100% water supply in the city.
