
Jammu, Sep 18,: A man died after allegedly being attacked with a khokhri during a birthday celebration near Lower Roop Nagar in Jammu, police said.
The incident took place when Neeraj alias Anshu was celebrating his birthday by the roadside near Lower Roop Nagar. According to the preliminary police inquiry, his friends John Sotra, Gaurav Singh, Sugandh Bhatti and Pawan Nair alias Sameer were present, while Neeraj was accompanied by his brother Rishu.
Police said that during the cake-cutting, Pawan Nair applied cake on Neeraj’s face, following which the two entered into a verbal altercation. When John Sotra, Gaurav Singh and Sugandh Bhatti allegedly tried to pacify them, Neeraj became enraged and allegedly took out a khokhri he was carrying and attacked Pawan Nair on the neck, causing serious injuries.
Pawan Nair was subsequently taken to Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu by his friends, where attending doctors declared him brought dead, police said.
On receiving information from the Police Post GMC Jammu, a team from Police Station Janipur reached the hospital and conducted a preliminary inquiry into the circumstances of the death.
Police said a case under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) has been registered at Police Station Janipur and investigation has been initiated.
The police have apprehended Neeraj alias Anshu and his brother Rishu in connection with the case, and both are presently in police custody at Police Station Janipur, according to officials. Police said efforts were also underway to recover the alleged weapon of offence.
The body has been shifted to the mortuary for post-mortem examination. Further investigation into the circumstances leading to the death is underway.
