Parliamentary Panel Submits Report on Waqf (Amendment) Bill to LS speaker

New Delhi: The Joint Committee of Parliament reviewing the Waqf (Amendment) Bill has submitted its report to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. Committee chairperson Jagdambika Pal formally presented the report at Birla’s office in Parliament House on Thursday.

The panel had adopted the report on Wednesday with a 11-14 majority vote, incorporating changes proposed by ruling BJP members. However, opposition members criticized the amendments, alleging that they undermine Waqf boards and infringe upon the constitutional rights of the Muslim community.

In response, they submitted dissent notes opposing the report.

BJP members defended the Bill, which was introduced in the Lok Sabha in August last year, arguing that it aims to modernize, enhance transparency, and ensure accountability in the management of Waqf properties. The opposition, however, sees it as an attempt to interfere in the functioning of Waqf boards.(KNS)
