Conduct of assembly elections has become a “forbidden tree” in J&K: Omar Abdullah

Kupwara: National Conference Vice-President and former chief minister Omar Abdullah on Monday said that conduct of assembly elections has become a “forbidden tree” in J&K. He said people are eagerly waiting for the day when elections for local constituent assembly will take place as they are living a miserable life in absence of an elected government.

He added that the Supreme Court was informed about local body, Panchayat, DDC and BDC polls but there was a complete silence adopted over conduct of assembly elections in J&K.

“The Supreme Court was informed about Local Body, Panchayat and DDC Elections, but there is no talk about assembly elections in J&K for which people have been eagerly waiting for,” Omar Abdullah as per KNS said while talking to reporters in Kupwara. Earlier NC held a massive workers convention in north Kashmir’s Kupwara where senior party leaders addressed the convention and emphasized workers to gear up their public outreach program and make the party more strong at grassroots level.

Omar, the former chief minister of J&K said conduct of Parliamentary elections is a compulsion of BJP government and only two people in the country are known to reality when elections will take place.

To a query he said NC will field a best and suitable candidate for north Kashmir’s Parliamentary seat and the decision will be taken with the party leadership after thorough consultations. “As far as the candidate for Lok Sabha elections from north Kashmir is concerned the call will be taken by the party. We will also put forth our views for a better candidate from north Kashmir but the final call will be taken by the party high command,” he said.

He said if the situation is normal then why elections are not being held in J&K. “What stops the BJP government from holding assembly elections in J&K if the situation is far better than previous years,” Omar Abdullah said.
