Uri’s Ramgi village turns into dumping site, locals aghast

Uri, May 9: Inhabitants of Ramgi in Uri are up in arms against the local Municipal Committee for allegedly dumping garbage in the open in the village.

A local delegation told GNS that the Municipal Committee has been dumping the garbage for a considerable period of time now. “The garbage mounds have piled much to the inconvenience to the local residents”, they rued.

Sarpanch Ramgi, Javed Ahmed Malik alleged that the employees of Municipal Committee Uri bring all the garbage and filth from Uri and dump it in the open near the residential areas of the village.

“Stinking smell emanates from the spot and one can see the flies hovering over there. This has made it tough for us to live in the village, he lamented adding, the dumping of waste has attracted the dogs too, making it difficult for our children to come out of their homes.”

“We brought this issue to the notice of the administration but we were told that this land has been acquired by the department for the same purpose. If the department had acquired the land for this purpose, the department should have dug a pit and the garbage should have been dumped inside and later chemicals should have been sprinkled to avoid foul smell,” he added.

Manzoor Ahmed, a local, said that foul smell is posing a health risk to them. “If nothing is done at the earliest, it can cause severe health issues,” he said.

Locals have appealed to the administration to look into the matter and for the way out.

When contacted, Executive Officer Municipal Committee Uri, Farhana Showkat told GNS that their JCB machine is defunct at present. “We have written to the Mechanical Division Baramulla for its repair. Once it gets repaired, the whole garbage will be dumped in deep pits,” she assured.
