Morning rain brings some respite from heat in Srinagar

Srinagar, Jul 19 (UNI) After witnessing the hottest day at 35 degrees in eight years, Monday morning rain and strong winds brought some relief to the people in Srinagar as the minimum temperature registered several degree drops.

A Met department spokesman has warned isolated heavy rain, thunderstorm and lightning which could cause a flash flood, landslides, shooting stones and water-logging in low-lying areas in the Kashmir valley during the next 24 hours.

During the subsequent 48 hours, widespread moderate to heavy rain and thundershowers would continue in the Union Territory (UT), he said adding there is a possibility of improvement in the weather from July 23.

A spokesman said the maximum temperature was 3.2 degrees to 5.2 degrees above normal in the Kashmir valley on Sunday when Srinagar witnessed the hottest day in eight years.

However, morning rain and strong winds in most areas in the valley today could result in a drop in the minimum temperature though it was still above normal.

The minimum temperature in Srinagar was 20 degrees, 1.6 degrees above normal against 23.2 degrees which were 4.8 notches above normal on Sunday when the maximum temperature was 35 degrees, the hottest in eight years.

He said there could be moderate rain and thundershowers and the maximum and minimum temperature would be around 22 degrees and 17 degrees respectively during the next 24 hours in Srinagar.
