
England and Norway booked their places in the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-finals after dramatic Round of 16 victories, while co-hosts Mexico and five-time world champions Brazil were eliminated.
England defeated Mexico 3-2 at Estadio Banorte in Mexico City. Jude Bellingham put England in front with goals in the 36th and 38th minutes. Julián Quiñones pulled one back for Mexico in the 42nd minute. England were reduced to 10 men when Jarell Quansah was sent off in the 54th minute, but Harry Kane converted a penalty in the 60th minute to restore a two-goal advantage. Raúl Jiménez scored from the penalty spot in the 69th minute, yet England held on to secure a place in the quarter-finals.
In the other Round of 16 tie, Norway stunned Brazil 2-1 to reach the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals for the first time in their history. Erling Haaland opened the scoring in the 79th minute with a header before adding his second goal in the 90th minute. Brazil’s only goal came from Neymar, who converted a penalty in stoppage time. Earlier in the match, Norway goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland saved a penalty from Bruno Guimarães, a key moment in the upset victory.
Following these results, Canada, Mexico and Brazil have been eliminated from the tournament. Among the three host nations, only the United States remains, with a Round of 16 match against Belgium scheduled for 7 July. England will face Norway in the quarter-finals.
