UN chief warns of deepening crisis in the Middle East

Caption: The UN Secretary-General stressed that “all parties must move towards a diplomatic solution. No more attacks. No more excuses.”

The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, has warned that the Middle East is moving towards a serious crisis whose consequences could extend far beyond the region.

In a post on social media platform X, he said: “The Middle East is plunging deeper into crisis, with consequences that are being felt well beyond the region.”

He added that the past week had seen further attacks and a deterioration in the situation, with the ceasefire increasingly resembling a period of lower-intensity fighting rather than a complete cessation of hostilities.

Mr Guterres warned that “we must not underestimate the risk that this lower-intensity fighting could turn into a full-scale war”.

He urged all sides to pursue diplomacy, saying: “All parties must move towards a diplomatic solution. No more attacks. No more excuses.”
