World Soil Day: Horticulture Deptt organizes Workshop

Srinagar: On the occasion of World Soil Day, the Horticulture Department today organized a workshop themed Caring for soils: Measure, Monitor & Manage at Conference Hall of Horticulture Complex Rajbagh, Srinagar.

The workshop was organized under the chairmanship of Director Horticulture Kashmir, Zahoor Ahmad Bhat. In his keynote address, Director elaborated on the soil being the fundamental ingredient of the composition of our planet, and highlighted the importance of healthy soil for survival of flora and fauna on the earth planet.

Addressing the gathering, he said in the event of soil degradation it has become inevitable to adopt Sustainable soil management practices, such as minimum tillage, crop rotation, organic matter addition, and cover cropping, improve soil health, reduce erosion and pollution, and enhance water infiltration and storage.

The Director said these practices preserve soil biodiversity, improve fertility, and contribute to carbon sequestration, playing a crucial role in the fight against climate change.

He said, nature has bestowed us with fertile and balanced soil so it is our duty to safeguard it to save the future of our coming generations.

The Director said that the Horticulture department has a facility of Soil analysis for the farming community to enhance produce as well as fruit crop quality.

In the technical session, Soil and Leaf Analyst through his power point presentation discussed in detail the pros and cons of soil analysis, its importance, procedure of soil sampling and modern techniques.
