Asian Mail

Madrid: 95 people have been killed so far due to floods caused by heavy rains in the eastern region of Valencia and the neighboring provinces of Albacete and Cuenca.

Angel Victor Torres, Minister of Regional Policy and Democratic Memory, reported this.

Continuous heavy rain from Tuesday night to Wednesday morning led to flooding,  more than 400 liters per square meter, flooding parts of Valencia and the provinces of Albacete and Cuenca.

More than 60 roads have been closed due to flooding, including the main highways between the east coast and Madrid and Valencia. Local train services have been suspended and high-speed rail links between Valencia and the capital have also been suspended.

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez will visit the affected areas on Thursday, the government said in an official release.

Mr Sanchez called an emergency cabinet meeting on Wednesday morning and made the formal announcement in the afternoon, pledging his government’s full support for the families of the flood victims.

About 1,000 members of the Spanish military’s United Emergency Response Unit (UME) have been deployed to the affected areas, helping with rescue and clean-up efforts.

However, due to floods, operations have been affected due to power outages and phone networks in many areas.
