Mehbooba not to contest J-K polls

J&K Assembly Now a Municipality, Says Mehbooba

Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chief and Former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Wednesday said she will not contest the assembly elections and has criticized the current state of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly.

Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chief and Former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has criticized the current state of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly.

She stated that it has been reduced to the level of a municipality with no real power to pass laws.

Mehbooba Mufti said, “We have always fought elections alone with the support of the people. We have fought to remove the sufferings of the people.”

Drawing a comparison between her tenure as Chief Minister and the current situation, Mufti highlighted the reduced power of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly. She said, “Omar Abdullah said he would have to visit the governor for the transfer of a peon. I am not just worrying about the transfer of peons, but I was a Chief Minister who ran the government with the BJP at the Centre, withdrew FIRs of 12,000 persons, wrote letters to separatists, got ceasefire implemented, made leaders meet Hurriyat leaders. Can you do it now? I was a Chief Minister, the Assembly was powerful, now the Assembly has been reduced to a municipality. We cannot pass a law. What will I do with such a chief ministership?”
