Light rain, snow lashes at few places of Kashmir

Srinagar: Light rain and snow lashes at a few places, including the ski resort of Gulmarg in Kashmir Valley, during the past 24 hours.

The ski resort of Gulmarg received yet another light spell of snowfall and rain, while Pahalgam and Kupwara also received rainfall overnight. Reports said some upper reaches of north Kashmir have started snowfall this morning.

Meteorological Centre Srinagar has predicted heavy to moderate rain and snowfall in the next couple of days in Jammu and Kashmir.

The wet weather is expected over most places in J&K till March 3 afternoon, with peak activity on the nights of Friday and Saturday.

Few places may experience heavy to very heavy snow, particularly over the higher reaches of North Kashmir, Central and South Kashmir, and the Pirpanjal range of Jammu Division.

MeT said a few places may experience thunder, lightning, and hailstorms that would be accompanied by gusty winds on March 1 and 2.

The MeT office has also issued an advisory stating that in view of heavy to very heavy snowfall over a few middle and higher reaches, travellers and tourists have been advised to plan accordingly and follow ivision. Traffic police advisory

The general public living in hilly areas have been advised not to venture in avalanche-prone and sloped areas. There are chances of landslides, mudslides, and shooting stones at a few places.

It has also advised farmers to withhold irrigation and other farm operations during 1st week of March.

Meanwhile, the night temperature improved and was recorded above normal in Kashmir Valley on Friday.

The MeT office said that the minimum temperature during the intervening nights of Thursday and Friday in Srinagar was recorded at 4.5°C, against the 2.1°C recorded the previous night. It was 3.0°C above normal for the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir.

Qazigund on Srinagar-Jammu National had a low of 2.4°C against the -1.2°C the previous night, and Kokernag in south Kashmir settled at 2.3°C against the -0.4°C recorded a day ago.

The minimum temperature at Gulmarg improved but was recorded below freezing point and settled at -3.2°C against -5.6°C on Friday. It was 2.6°C above normal for the famous ski resort of North Kashmir’s Baramulla district.

The mercury at the tourist resort of Pahalgam also improved and was recorded at 1.3°C against -4.4°C the previous night, and it was 4.8°C above normal for the tourist hot spot of south Kashmir.

Kupwara had a low of 1.3°C against -1.7°C, and it was 1.3°C above normal for the frontier north Kashmir district on Thursday, the MeT office said.
