Death toll rises to 5 in gas tank explosion in Mongolia

Ulan Bator: The death toll from a recent gas tank explosion here has risen to five after one more related death was reported on Wednesday, according to the National Trauma and Orthopedic Research Center.

“Today, a citizen with burns of over 90-95 percent of the body due to the explosion died at the hospital,” the center said in a statement.

A tanker reportedly carrying 60 tons of liquefied natural gas exploded at an intersection in the southeastern district of Bayanzurkh in the capital last week due to a vehicle crash.

More than 10 others were injured during the explosion, and four of them are in critical condition, according to the center.

Over 30 vehicles were burned, and several nearby buildings partially collapsed due to the explosion, the country’s National Emergency Management Agency said.

Mongolia’s State General Prosecutor’s Office has set up a team of over 100 people to investigate the incident.
