Around 16.15 pc turnout recorded till 9.30 AM in Bengal Assy poll

Kolkata, Apr 17 (UNI) Amid elaborate security arrangements, around 16.15 % electorate exercised their franchise till 9.30 AM on Saturday in the fifth phase West Bengal Assembly election to 45 seats to decide the fate of 319 candidates.

Long queues were seen outside polling stations, where voting will continue till 6.30 PM.As the polling for the fifth phase Assembly polls began this morning, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah urged voters to come out and vote in large numbers.

Taking to his tweeter handle, Mr Modi said, Urging all those voting in today’s fifth phase of the West Bengal elections to vote in large numbers. First time voters in particular should exercise their franchise.

The Trinamool Congress alleged that at least 35 outsiders and BJP goons are threatening TMC voters who were on their way to the polling booth in Nadia’s Kalyani. An immense atmosphere of fear created in the area.

TMC alleged that Kamarhati candidate Madan Mitra was searched by Central Forces as he tried to enter a booth.I’ve full authority to enter a polling booth. They (Central forces) even searched my pocket in which I was carrying pictures of my goddess. This is a democratic country. I’m going to meet Chief Election Commissioner, said Mr Mitra.
