About 35 shanties of Rohingyas gutted in fire

Jammu, Apr 5 (UNI) About 35 shanties of illegal immigrants were gutted in a major fire here on the city outskirts during wee hours of Monday, said the police.

The blaze started at Kabaar and quickly engulfed the shanties (jhuggi) of the surrounding Maruti Mohalla, they said.

The fire raged for more than two hours and when the flames were put out, it had destroyed all the shelters of the Rohingya. The number of shanties affected by the fire is about 35 though it could be more, they said.

Senior Superintendent of Police(SSP), Chandan Kohli told UNI, “Fire started at around 0100 hours and continued for around two hours”

He added that three fire tenders along with police teams were pressed into service, adding, “no injury or loss of life has been reported.”

“Cause of the fire is yet to be known but it reportedly started from the nearby garbage dump at the site,” said the SSP.
