Non-stop rains continue in J&K

Weatherman issues yellow alert for isolated thunders, lightning

Srinagar, March 27 : The overnight rains continued non-stop across Jammu and Kashmir on Friday, causing water logging in many parts of the Union Territory.

An official of the Meteorological office told that Srinagar received a rainfall of 19.6mm from last night to 1730 hours on Friday while Qazigund, Kokernag and Pahalgam in south Kashmir received 45.6mm, 22.9 and 14.2mm downpour respectively for the same time. Kupwara district in north Kashmir recorded 18.4mm of rain during the time.

While rains lashed plains, higher reaches including world famous Ski resort of Gulmarg accumulated fresh albeit small amount of snowfall.

The maximum temperature for the day in Srinagar was 9.1 degree Celsius against the normal of 17.6 deg Celsius for this time of the year while the night temperature stood at 6.8 against normal of 6.1 degree Celsius, he said.

Regarding Jammu, the official said, 51.5mm of rainfall was recorded in 24 hours till 0830 hours. Banihal had 38mm, Batote 47mm, Katra 76.4mm and Bhaderwah recorded 32.6mm of downpour in the 24 hours.

The waterman has predicted wide spread light to moderate rain over J&K regions and scattered light rain and snow over ladakh region in next 24-hours.

The MeT office has also issued yellow warning for isolated thunders and lightining with gusty winds of 30-40 Kmph in both Jammu and Kashmir regions.

There are four types colour codes signifying the level of caution: green (which means no action), yellow (situation to be watched), amber (government agencies need to be prepared for severe weather) and red (action needed by the agencies).
