Niger Loses 29 Soldiers in Ambush Near Mali Border

Niamey, : Twenty-nine soldiers were killed and several others wounded in an ambush by armed individuals on a military patrol near the Malian border, local media reported on Thursday.
The attack took place on Tuesday, May 14 at around 1500 hrs in the Tongo Tongo area in the southwestern Tillaberi region.
According to ActuNiger, the military patrol, including 52 soldiers, was attacked in the Tongo Tongo area in the southwestern Tillaberi region. According to the government, only 22 service members managed to return to their home base after two hours of fighting.
It is in Tongo Tongo, a few kilometers from the Malian border, that on October 4, 2017 another mixed patrol of Nigerien and American soldiers were attacked by Islamic State terror group which resulted in the death four US and four Nigerian personnel.
