Srinagar turns white briefly due to snowfall

Srinagar, Dec 29 : Srinagar, the summer capital of Union Territory (UT) of Jammu and Kashmir again turned white for a brief period on Tuesday due to fresh snowfall on Tuesday.

However, the upper reaches, including world famous ski resort of Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg, Yusmarg and Aharbal besides all plains received moderate to heavy snowfall.

After recording 2.6 degree above normal maximum temperature due to sunny day on Monday, Srinagar witnessed a major change in the weather this morning. As people woke up this morning the sky was cloudy followed by snow.

Roof and tree tops besides open fields and roads had turned white due to snowfall. However, snow stopped after about an hour. The authorities had put in place snow clearance machines at different places to meet any challenge. The Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) has already directed its men to be alert to clear snow on foothpaths and interior roads.

Snow later melted with some improvement in the weather though sky was still cloudy.

Though majority shops and business establishments remained closed till 1000 hrs, shops selling “Hareesa” a special winter dish in Kashmir, witnessed heavy rush since early this morning.

Despite snow and chilly weather conditions, vendors, particularly selling vegetables, fish and fruits are also out. Less number of vehicles were seen on the roads in the morning. Shops and other business establishments also reopened as the day progressed.

Tourists and locals were seen taking photographs in the Dal Lake area and other parks gardens.

A Met department spokesman said due to cloudy sky, the minimum temperature was above normal in Srinagar.

He said sky would be mainly clear and the maximum and minimum temperature will be around 10 and minus 4 degree respectively during the next 24 hours in Srinagar.
