Heavy rains claim five lives in Palghar, Thane

Thane , :  Five people were killed including a three-year-old infant due to wall collapse as heavy rains lashed Thane and Palghar districts, the authorities said on Tuesday.
In the first incident at Kalyan, a wall of a Urdu school collapsed at around 0130 hrs in which three people lost their lives and one was injured. The dead were identified as Sogan Kamble, 60, Karina Chand, 32, and Bushan Chand, 03. The firemen and disaster cell were immediately pressed into service after receiving the message.
Several areas in the township were marooned and submerged in water, the officials stated.
In another incident in Palghar district, a sixty-year-old man was washed away in the stream in Kundanpada of Jawhar, the authorities said. Disaster Control Cell Chief Vivekanand Kadam said that body of the victim was found and sent for the postmortem. He also said that last night one Kailas Babu Nadge, 29 of Alkapur, Baijapada of Dahanu was also washed away in the floods. His body was recovered this morning and sent for postmortem to a government hospital.
“Local Tehsildars from Jawhar and Dahanu will conduct inquiry and panchnama and appropriate relief would be given to next of the the kins”, Mr Kadam said.
Regional Disaster Management Cell (RDMC) Chief Santosh Kadam told media persons that three people were trapped in a midstream at around 0140 hrs when their car fell down in a river in Chenna creek between Thane and Bhayander. The firemen from Balkum were immediately rushed in for rescue. “All of them were saved but their car is still struck in the river”, he said.
In another incident, a TDRF personnel saved lives of around 50 people and shifted them to safer place when their dwellings in Bhaskar colony of the city were submerged at around 0230 hrs, RDMC chief said.
