Iran–US Historic Talks Set to Begin in Islamabad: A Decisive Moment from Temporary Ceasefire to Lasting Peace

Asia Mail Monitoring Desk

The capital of Pakistan, Islamabad, has emerged as the centre of high-stakes international diplomacy, as global attention turns to what is expected to be a pivotal moment in Iran–US relations.

According to international media reports, direct talks between Iran and the United States are set to begin in Islamabad under a two-week ceasefire arrangement facilitated through Pakistan’s mediation. Diplomats and analysts describe the development as a potentially decisive turning point for regional stability and broader global politics.

The talks are expected to take place against the backdrop of a fragile calm in the Middle East, where weeks of heightened tensions have been temporarily halted. However, a clear and durable framework for lasting peace has yet to emerge.

A fragile pause, not peace

Political observers say the expected negotiations in Islamabad are aimed at converting a temporary ceasefire into a structured diplomatic process that could eventually lead to long-term stability. Yet they caution that the path ahead remains uncertain and diplomatically complex.

Islamabad under tight security

Ahead of the expected talks, security has been significantly tightened across Islamabad. Major roads have been closed, checkpoints established at key entry and exit points, and a heavy deployment of security forces has been reported.

The city, typically bustling with activity, now appears unusually subdued. Business activity has slowed, public movement has decreased, and an atmosphere of quiet tension has settled over the capital.

Officials say the situation reflects not a routine diplomatic visit, but a rare international moment where questions of war and peace may be shaped at the negotiating table.

How tensions escalated

The current Iran–US confrontation is the result of long-standing political and strategic disputes that have intensified in recent months.

Following military incidents and exchanges in the Gulf region in late February 2026, tensions escalated sharply. A major incident on 28 February further deepened the crisis, triggering a cycle of accusations, retaliatory statements, and military responses between the two sides.

The escalation also created instability in global energy markets, particularly amid concerns over the security of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical oil transit routes.

After weeks of uncertainty, a temporary ceasefire was reached through international pressure and backchannel diplomacy. While it prevented immediate conflict, it did not address the underlying causes of the dispute.

Why Islamabad?

Diplomatic analysts say Pakistan’s relatively balanced relations with both Iran and the United States have positioned it as a trusted facilitator in this sensitive process. Pakistan has therefore emerged as an acceptable and secure venue for preliminary diplomatic engagement.

Its geographic position and regional influence are also seen as factors that make Islamabad a practical choice for such high-level and sensitive discussions.

The Iranian delegation

The Iranian delegation is expected to be led by Speaker of Parliament Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, a senior political figure with deep ties to Iran’s military and governing establishment.

A former commander in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and former mayor of Tehran, Ghalibaf now plays a central role in shaping state policy as Speaker of Parliament.

He is expected to be joined by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, one of Iran’s most experienced diplomats and a key figure in previous nuclear negotiations.

Iran’s position remains firm: it is willing to engage in dialogue beyond the ceasefire, but only under conditions that safeguard its national interests and security concerns.

The US delegation

The United States delegation is expected to be led by Vice President JD Vance, marking a notable level of senior political involvement in the process.

He is joined by Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, who has previously participated in diplomatic engagements in Geneva, and senior adviser Jared Kushner, a key figure in earlier Middle East diplomacy efforts.

The US side is expected to focus on limiting Iran’s nuclear programme, addressing regional security concerns, and ensuring the stability of global energy supply chains.

Talks yet to begin: cautious expectations

At this stage, the talks have not yet started, and key procedural details remain unclear. Whether both sides will fully commit to formal engagement remains an open question.

Diplomatic observers say that even if the meeting goes ahead, it would represent only the first step in what could be a long and fragile process.

They caution that initial contact would not immediately resolve deep-rooted disagreements over Iran’s nuclear ambitions, sanctions regime, and regional conflicts. Instead, it would mark the beginning of a highly uncertain diplomatic path.

In other words, the significance of the moment lies not in what has already happened—but in what may still unfold.

Core issues on the table

If the talks proceed, the agenda is expected to include:

  • Transition from ceasefire to a permanent agreement
  • The future of Iran’s nuclear programme
  • Economic sanctions and relief mechanisms
  • Security in the Strait of Hormuz
  • Regional proxy conflicts
  • Situations in Lebanon, Syria, and Iraq

Pakistan’s role

Pakistan is expected to act as a facilitator, providing logistical support, security arrangements, and diplomatic coordination to enable the process.

Officials in Islamabad have described the development as an important opportunity to contribute to regional peace efforts.

Global reaction

International reaction has been cautiously positive. The United Nations and several major global powers have welcomed the prospect of dialogue.

The European Union, China, and Russia have all expressed hope that the process could help reduce tensions in the region. However, most observers remain cautious, warning that the situation remains highly fragile.

Possible outcomes

Experts outline three broad possibilities:

  • Limited progress: ceasefire continues, but core disputes remain unresolved
  • Comprehensive agreement: gradual breakthroughs on key security and political issues
  • Breakdown: renewed tensions and escalation

A moment of uncertainty and possibility

As Islamabad prepares for what could be a defining diplomatic moment, the world is watching closely.

Whether the talks succeed, stall, or never fully take shape remains uncertain—but their potential impact has already placed them at the centre of global attention.

For now, the defining question remains: can two long-standing adversaries move from confrontation to dialogue—and possibly, towards peace?
