Government Denies Iran-Linked Fraud Claims in J&K; Fact Check Unit Labels Viral Posts Fake

Srinagar, March 28,: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has flagged as fake a series of social media posts and reports claiming the existence of an alleged Iran donation scam in Jammu and Kashmir, cautioning the public against believing or circulating unverified information.

The clarification comes amid widespread circulation of messages online alleging that funds were being fraudulently collected in the name of Iran, triggering concern among sections of the public.

In a post on X, the MEA’s Fact Check unit shared screenshots of the viral content, prominently marked as “FAKE,” and described the claims as “false and baseless.”

The advisory stressed the need for vigilance, urging citizens to rely only on verified and authentic sources of information. Officials warned that the spread of misinformation could create confusion and unnecessary panic.

“Public is advised to exercise caution and not fall for such misleading narratives,” the Fact Check unit said, according to the official post.

Despite the official denial, some social media accounts continue to propagate the claims, citing unnamed Intelligence Bureau officials and alleging that certain groups are collecting money from people under false pretenses.

Officials, however, have not confirmed any such scam, and no formal statement from intelligence agencies has substantiated these allegations.

An official said that misinformation often gains traction during sensitive periods, especially when it is linked to foreign entities or security-related narratives, making fact-check advisories crucial to counter false claims.

Authorities have reiterated that sharing unverified information can amplify panic and mislead the public, and have urged users to verify content before forwarding it on digital platforms.

The MEA’s intervention comes as part of broader efforts by the government to curb the spread of fake news and ensure that only credible information reaches the public. [KNT]
