Katra, Feb 10,: A protest was held in Katra against the proposed Shri Mata Vaishno Devi ropeway project, with demonstrators voicing strong opposition and warning of sustained agitation if the plan is not withdrawn.
Participants raised slogans against the Bharatiya Janata Party, alleging that the project was being pursued without adequately addressing local concerns. Protesters said they would oppose the ropeway “tooth and nail” and would not support decisions taken in the name of any political party if such moves were against public interest.
During the protest, demonstrators expressed appreciation for Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary and Bani MLA Rameshwar Singh for what they described as standing with the local population and opposing the ropeway project.
The protesters also criticised BJP MLA Baldev Sharma, alleging that he had personal interests linked to the proposed project. They said such interests should not be allowed to influence decisions affecting livelihoods and the local economy.
Speakers at the protest said the ropeway project would have adverse consequences for traditional businesses and employment in Katra, and demanded that the government reconsider the proposal after wider consultation with stakeholders.
The protest remained peaceful, with organisers stating that further demonstrations would be held if their demands were not addressed. [KNT]
