Jammu, Feb 9,: The unemployment rate in Jammu and Kashmir has shown a noticeable decline over the past four years, reflecting gradual improvement in employment conditions and economic activity across the Union Territory, according to official data.
As per the figures, the unemployment rate on usual status, considering principal and subsidiary status, has declined from 6.7 percent in 2019–20 to 6.1 percent in 2023–24. The reduction indicates a modest but sustained improvement in job availability and workforce engagement.
The positive trend is also reflected in key labour indicators. The Labour Force Participation Rate has increased to 64.3 percent in 2023–24, while the Worker Population Ratio has risen to 60.4 percent during the same period. Officials said the rise in these indicators suggests greater participation of inhabitants in economic activities and improved absorption of workers into the labour market.
The government has said the improvement points towards increased employment opportunities across sectors, including services, construction, and local enterprises. it added that higher participation rates indicate growing confidence among job seekers and a gradual expansion of livelihood options.
Officials said continued focus on skill development, infrastructure projects, and employment-oriented schemes has contributed to the upward movement in labour indicators. They said sustained efforts are required to further reduce unemployment and ensure stable employment opportunities, particularly for youth.
The data as per the government highlights a gradual strengthening of the labour market in Jammu and Kashmir. [KNT]
