Fake video amplified by national channels sparks concern in Kashmir, Police urge public to stop sharing misleading content

Anantnag: The Jammu and Kashmir Police have strongly refuted claims circulated by some national media channels that two locals from Anantnag were militants, terming the video in circulation as fake and misleading.

Police said a video has gone viral on social media platforms and was even uploaded by certain national news outlets, falsely portraying two individuals as militants. The police clarified that the claim is completely baseless and untrue.

According to the police, the two individuals seen in the video are students and were on their way to purchase a smartphone when the video was recorded. The misrepresentation of their identity caused unnecessary panic and distress, prompting the police to issue a clarification.

Officials said the youths have since approached the police and filed a formal complaint regarding the circulation of the fake video and the false allegations attached to it. Police said appropriate action will be taken as per law against those responsible for spreading misinformation.

The police have appealed to the public to exercise caution and responsibility while using social media, urging people to desist from sharing unverified and misleading content that can harm innocent individuals and disturb public order.

Police reiterated that spreading fake videos and false narratives is a serious offence and requested cooperation from all sections of society to curb the menace of misinformation. [KNT]
