Extreme Cold Hits Zojila Pass with –17°C, Movement Through Corridor Slows

Sonamarg: Zojila Pass, the critical mountain corridor connecting Kashmir with Ladakh, recorded an extreme minimum temperature of minus 17 degree Celsius, marking one of the harshest cold spells of the season. The drop in temperature has caused additional stress on traffic movement through the strategic route, while officials and locals reported increased formation of black ice across several stretches.

Authorities monitoring the sector said that the plunge in temperature was sharper than previous nights, with wind chill making conditions even more severe. The freezing weather has also hardened accumulated frost, making the surface highly slippery and slowing down civilian as well as essential service convoys.

Traffic officials deployed in the area said that movement is being allowed in a controlled manner to prevent skidding-related accidents. Mechanical engineering teams have been stationed near critical points to manage ice formation and assist stranded vehicles when required. The high-altitude conditions have also led to intermittent road closures during early morning hours.

Locals familiar with the route said the sudden intensification of cold has increased the risk of disruptions in the coming days if the temperature continues to fall. The area surrounding Zojila, including Baltal and Minimarg, has also reported a significant drop in night temperatures.

Meteorological inputs indicate that upper reaches of Kashmir and Ladakh may continue to face severe cold, with minimal chances of relief during the next few days. Officials have advised commuters to strictly follow travel advisories and avoid unnecessary movement through the pass during late evening and early morning hours. [KNT]
