Intense Cold Maintains Its Grip on Kashmir

Srinagar, Dec 11: The severe cold wave continues unabated across the Kashmir Valley as prolonged dry weather keeps night temperatures consistently below the freezing point.

According to Kashmir Weather, Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir recorded a minimum temperature of minus 2.9°C, compared to minus 1.9°C the previous night. The season’s coldest night so far was recorded on November 28, when the temperature dipped to minus 4.5°C.

At the Valley’s popular tourist destinations, Pahalgam and Gulmarg, the minimum temperatures stood at minus 4.6°C and 0.0°C, respectively. In the border district of Kupwara, the minimum temperature was recorded at minus 4.2°C, while Qazigund — known as the Gateway to Kashmir — registered minus 3.2°C.

South Kashmir’s Pulwama and Shopian districts remained the coldest in the Valley, with both recording a minimum temperature of minus 5.2°C. In Anantnag and Kulgam, temperatures were minus 4.3°C and minus 0.4°C, respectively.

In north Kashmir, Baramulla recorded minus 2.3°C, while Bandipora saw temperatures dip to minus 3.5°C. Central Kashmir’s Budgam and Ganderbal districts reported minimum temperatures of minus 4.0°C and minus 2.4°C, respectively.

At Sonamarg, another major tourist destination, the minimum temperature stood at minus 2.5°C, while the high-altitude Zojila Pass witnessed a bitter minus 18.0°C.

In the Union Territory of Ladakh, Leh recorded a minimum temperature of minus 7.0°C and Kargil minus 6.5°C, whereas Drass — one of the coldest inhabited places in the world — reported minus 9.9°C.

According to the Meteorological Department, no major change in weather conditions is expected in the Valley until December 20.
