Shopian:At least two residential houses and a cow shed were gutted in a fire incident that broke out on Monday at Memander village in Shopian district, officials said.
Fire and Emergency Services officials said the fire erupted in the residential cluster during the day, causing extensive damage to two houses and a cow shed before spreading could be checked. An army unit stationed in the area, along with the Jammu and Kashmir Police and locals, rushed to the spot and joined firefighting efforts.
Fire tenders were pressed into service soon after, and coordinated efforts by Fire and Emergency Services personnel, army troops, police and locals helped bring the fire under control.
Officials said the structures involved were made largely of combustible material, which contributed to the intensity of the blaze. However, timely intervention prevented the fire from spreading to nearby houses, averting a larger disaster in the densely inhabited locality.
No loss of human life or injuries were reported in the incident. The cause of the fire was not immediately known, and authorities said an assessment of losses is being carried out.
Police have taken cognizance of the incident. [KNT]
