Srinagar, Dec 4,: The Union government has appointed Amit Sharma as the Director of Census Operations and Citizen Registration for the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, officials said on Thursday.
Sharma, a 2012-batch IAS officer of the AGMUT cadre, has assumed charge following his central deputation and will be responsible for supervising census-related operations and citizen registration work across both Union Territories.
Officials said the appointment comes as part of administrative preparedness ahead of the next phase of census activity, including updating of records, coordination with district authorities and strengthening of field units across difficult terrain areas.
Sources in the administration said Sharma will oversee staffing, logistics, data verification systems and district-level coordination to ensure smooth execution of census processes in both Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
The post had remained without a full-time officer for an extended period, and officials noted that the appointment reflects renewed official focus on demographic and registration exercises in the region after years of delay.
Sharma has previously served in multiple administrative roles across northeastern and Himalayan states, including senior positions linked to digital governance, infrastructure development and public administration.
The Directorate of Census Operations is responsible for creating and updating household records, population statistics and essential civil registration frameworks required for governance planning, public welfare distribution and administrative policy formulation. [KNT]
